I have been assisting the current membership with their wastewater needs located at 61 W Beeville Rd Matlock,WA. It is my understanding they wish to continue with the current usage, having regular membership meetings and gatherings as well as an occasional public event. My findings are as follows. Existing OSS The existing On-site sewage system (OSS) serving the grange appears to have been installed in the spring of 1957 (see Mason County Health scanned records). No calculations are attached to these records justifying the original OSS approved usage. Most likely the system was installed at 1 gallon per 1 sqft. After a thorough inspection of this system, I have calculated what I perceive as reasonable usage of this system. The subsurface soil absorption system (SSAS) is a 10'wide X 40' long gravity bed (400sqft) and is constructed of concrete tiles and a sandy gravel base. The surrounding native soil is a Gravelly Loamy Sand (Type3 soil WAC 246-272A-0220)The receiving soil application rate will be calculated per WAC 246-272A-0234 Column A (0.8 gal/sqft/day). For the purposes of this report, the existing SSAS will be sized to treat 320 GPD of residential waste strength septic tank effluent using gravity distribution. My inspection on 1/30/2026 involved the use of a sewer camera to locate existing concrete tiles and condition, the tiles appear to be in good shape and seem to be installed well. I also water tested the drainfield at 5 gpm for 90 minutes, approximately 450 gallons with no backups or drainage issues. This system is currently connected to the granges lavatories only. This existing SSAS appears to be functioning as intended;the existing septic tank is leaking and should be replaced. Existing Greywater System The kitchen is currently connected to an existing greywater system. This system is constructed of two 55 gal. barrels and approximately 20'of gravity distribution pipe. I have proposed we abandon this system and replace it with a Commercial Holding Tank. Commercial Holding Tank The proposed part-time Commercial Holding Tank(HTSS) shall have a minimum liquid volume capacity of 2400 gallons (Flooded Capacity) and be equipped with an audible &visual alarm set at the normal operating volume. This tank will be pumped as needed, at least once annually and/or before a large event serving meals. The EPA manual (Table 3-4.Typical wastewater flow rates from commercial sources) estimate 2-4 gallons per meal served. I will predict worst case scenario of 4 gallons per meal. Assuming a maximum of 150 meals served in a single event or 7-day period, the kitchen wastewater discharge will be calculated as follows. Page 1 of 2 Normal Operating Volume:4 x 150=600 gal. produced in a single event or 7-day period Reserve Storage Volume Calculated: 600 x 3= 1800 gal. Total liquid volume capacity required: 600+ 1800=2400 gal. Septic Tank Replacement The existing lavatory septic tank needs to be replaced; it appears to be leaking. I am proposing they replace the existing septic tank with a NuWater BNR-1000 and a 2700-gallon pump chamber. The lavatories wastewater is expected to be consistent with typical residential wastewater strength. Added treatment has been recommended because of the proximity to surface water. Additionally, the BNR- 1000 will redigest untreated sewage during the days the facilities are not in use therefore producing a higher treated effluent. The membership anticipates a maximum of 15 large events per year with up to 150 guests in a single event. It is my intention to add a large pump chamber capable of storing treated wastewater and then time-dosing the effluent to the existing SSAS for several days after an event is held.Spreading out the dosing is a more appropriate way to feed the existing SSAS. According to the EPA Manual (Table 3-4.Typical wastewater flow rates from commercial sources)for a public lavatory it is estimated 3-6 gallons per user. Predicting each person, 150 people use the restrooms at 6 gallons per person I calculate up to 900 gallons could be produced in a single day event. The larger pump chamber will be able to store this effluent and then time-dose to the existing SSAS at a rate of 300 GPD,taking approximately 3 days after a large event to be discharged to the SSAS. I anticipate several days or weeks between events that the system will be at idle (little to no usage). An additional hand-washing station for members and guests has been considered and is calculated into the 6 gallons per user daily flow. Conclusion All work shall be by a certified wastewater installer and all sewage/greywater disposed from abandoned tanks and holding tank shall be pumped by certified pumper and dumped at an approved wastewater facility. I recommend that the membership keep a log of monthly water usage, event water usage and pump-outs so adjustments can be made in the future. It is my professional opinion with the proposed tank repairs and recommendations this will be sufficient for the memberships anticipated usage. Please see attached proposed designs.
