Haven Lake Drive, Tahuya, has been received and reviewed by Public Works. The assessment appears to satisfactorily address County requirements for Geological assessment. The assessment's author indicates that, in his opinion, the proposed development of the property will not cause stability problems for the subject property. From the contents of the assessment, I recommend accepting the assessment as satisfying the County's requirement(s) for stability investigation. Recommendations contained in the assessment should be incorporated into the site's development and made conditions for permit issuance. In particular, building setbacks from the crest of the slopes should be observed. With the engineer's recommendations incorporated into the site's development, stability issues appear to have been adequately addressed. Adequate erosion and sediment control features need to be implemented during land disturbing activities to protect neighboring properties and State waters from adverse stormwater runoff impacts. The migration or release of silty water or mud from the applicant's property will be considered a violation of County and State water quality protection regulations. BLD2005-01713 Dated November 2005 Subject: Geological Assessment on the referenced property. Dear Mr. Reeves: You called me and asked me to do a Geological Assessment on your property. I said I would and met you on your property in November 16-2005. We walked over your lot and discussed where you wanted to build your 24 by 36 foot Pole Garage. There is a shelf on the upper part of your property which is ideal for a building site. I took some photographs. Your building site has previously been graded nearly level some years ago. This site has no vegetation growing on it and dense hard soil is exposed on the surface. This site is presently being used as a parking area for several cars and pickups. This 50 foot lot has trees growing on the N.W. edge of the building site on lot#112. There is more driveway for the other lots(#114 and#115)on the N.E. side of the building site. The building site slopes gently at about 3 degrees from the horizontal to the N.E. The area between the access driveway and the road(N.E. Haven Lake drive)is heavily vegetated with native brush and trees. The S.E. slope from the building site to the residence is covered partially with grass and some heavy vegetation. Mason County may have designated this locality as a"Landslide Hazardous Area" according to the maps of Smith and Carlson(1977); however, I observed no slide activity either past or present in the immediate area of the building site. According to the Mason County Ordinance 17.01.100.E4 a Geological Assessment must contain the following 7 item at least. Item 1.The soils in this area are of the Alderwood Series(Ac) 15 to 30 percent slopes. They consist of brown well drained upland soils. They have developed from mixed gravelly glacial till dominated by acid igneous rocks. The embedded gravel is mainly granite and quartzite. Rainfall is 45 to 60 inches a year. Richl dated 11-21-2005 The native vegetation is a dense forest consisting of almost entirely of Douglas-fir and a dense understory of salal, Oregon-grape,vine maple and huckleberry. Alderwood Soils occupy the extensive rolling glacial moraines, and they are the dominate soils in the Eastern part of Mason County. In undisturbed areas, 1 to 2 inch mat of dark brown organic material is on the surface. This grades to a thin dark, grayish brown,highly organic mineral soil. The surface soil consists of friable, brown, medium acid gravelly sandy loam 8 to 13 inches deep. Below the surface soil to depths ranging from 18 to 24 inches, is a pale brown gravelly sandy loam that is friable,is single grained and contains small to moderate amounts of shot. Between this layer and the cemented till (hardpan) is a three to 10 inch layer of very pale brown loam. The cemented till consists of light gray gravelly sandy loam and it normally occurs at depths ranging from 24 to 32 inches. It is impermeable to roots and very slowly impermeable to water. The first few inches is usually laminated and streaked with reddish brown and yellow. Below this,to a depth of many feet,the till is uniformly cemented, fairly uniform light gray and medium to strong acid. A thin mat of roots often lies over the till. This soil is composed of boulders,rocks, gravel and sand with very little clay. Item 2—The ground water table would be many feet below the surface due to the terrain. Item 3 —Hard dense soil is at the surface of the building site from previously being graded. Item 4—I observed no slide activity either past or present in this immediate area. Item 5—I know of no history of land slides in this vicinity. Item 6- This proposed construction, in my opinion,will not cause any potential slide activity or block movements to the surrounding slopes. Item 7—This ground is stable so I don't see the need for further Geotechnical reports. A Plot Plan is shown on sheet 3. A Site Plan is shown on sheet 4. Profiles A-A and B-B is shown on sheet 5. The photographs on sheets 6 and 7 show views of the building site. The photographs on sheet 8 show the grassy slope from the building site to the residence looking S.E.
