On May 22, 1995, our office posted a stop work order at the above site
for the construction of a non-permitted deck. The failure to stop work, the
resuming of work without permission from the Building Official, or the removal,
mutilation destruction or concealment of the notice is punishable by fine and
imprisonment.
Pursuant to Mason County Ordinance No. 138-92, a building permit is
required for the construction of a deck. The only exemption applying towards
this type of structure is limited to a 3' x 3' landing, anything larger must be
permitted.
The inspector noted that the deck was not self-supporting at the time of
the posting. The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries which
regulates all construction within a manufactured home or adding weight bearing
to it, also requires detailed plans and permits in addition to Mason County
regulations. If the deck is free standing and self-supporting then no Dept. of
L & I permits are needed, only a Mason County building permit is necessary.
Enclosed you will find a deck detail example, a building permit application
and information on contacting the Dept. of Labor and Industries.
Please complete the application and construction drawings for the deck
and submit to this office prior to July 15, 1995.
