RE: Proposed Tree Removal

On Tuesday July 31, 2012, I made a site inspection to 151 NE Mountain View Dr., Tahuya
(Parcel No. 22319-50-00094) to examine 25 to 30 trees near the shoreline of Wooten Lake on
your property in north Mason County. I noted the location of the trees in proximity of the
nearby residence, the shoreline, and the remaining trees along the outlet creek from Wooten
Lake. I understand the scope of the height of the subject trees (90 to 110 ft.), the lean of
these mature trees, the careful cutting and removal of the noted trees in the buffer area, and
the location close to home improvements that concerns you.
When you plant 50 to 75 new trees for replacement of those removed in the immediate area of
tree removal, select native species (like red cedar, vine maple, western white pine, knobcone
pine, Oregon ash, or Douglas fir) and note that the trees should not obstruct views of the lake
from neighboring properties; small clusters of trees rather than a straight alignment of trees is
the recommended action for replanting near the buffer of the lake.
You may proceed with your proposed danger tree-removal on this parcel per Mason County
Resource Ordinance standards, and the needed care from damage to existing improvements
and adjacent upland vegetation. You may contact me for further information.

DANGER TREE CUTTING REQUEST

The Mason County Resource Ordinance provides the minimum requirements for vegetated buffers around marine shorelines,
lakes, streams, floodways, wetlands, and steep slopes. Except for the removal of a small percentage of very young trees,
native vegetation may not be harmed or removed within the resource OR within the protected buffers. An exception is
provided for trees that meet the following definition:
Danger Tree: A tree with a high probability of falling due to a debilitating disease, a structural defect, a root mass more than
50% exposed, or having been exposed to wind throw within the past 10 years, and where there is a residence or residential
accessory structure within a tree length of the base of the trunk, or where the top of a bluff or steep slope is endangered.
Property Owner's: Please fill out the following, and attach a site plan showing the location of the proposed danger trees in
relation to property lines and structures. Please submit photos if you have them.
* If the danger is not apparent to the reviewing County Planner, you will be required to submit a report prepared by a
professional forester or certified arborist (or they will need to complete and sign this form).

REQUIRED MITIGATION
A. Planting within the critical area or its buffer a total of six new native trees, each a minimum three years old.
B. The trunks of felled trees shall be left within the critical area or buffer unless a submitted report warrants its removal to avoid
spreading disease or pests. The trunk(s) tree may be segmented, but should be left in as large of segments as possible to
provide habitat.
C. Additional mitigation may be required if three or more trees are to be felled on one property within a 10 year period.
