Contacted by Phil Bennett to assess the health and risk factor of 2 Douglas Fir(Pseudotsuga menziesil) trees on
Parcel#322245000032 located on the North shore of the Hood Canal. He is concerned that the trees may not be
safe and requested an assessment by a certified arborist.
Findings:
Tree#1 Douglas fir, DBH 22", height 60'
Tree#2 Douglas fir, DBH 28", height 65'
Both trees appear to be in declining health. They are both ivy-covered, have considerable limb die-back, and dead
wood. The trees also have numerous misshapen and enlarged branches which may be an indicator of internal
decay and/or root rot. Both trees also have weather-related damage. They are located in a grouping of trees that
are much smaller In size,therefore they are more susceptible to failure in inclement weather. Both trees are
located in an area prone to high erosion. In the event one or both of the trees fail, this would increase the
instability of the surrounding slope.
Recommendation:
Although no arborist can predict when a tree may fail,there are certainly indicators that are present in these trees
that would make them more suspect. It is my recommendation that the trees be removed since failure of either
of these could cause considerable property damage or loss of life. I also recommend that the area be replanted
with a more appropriate species such as a Leyland cypress (Cupressus leylandii) to prevent further erosion.
