Dear Mr. Byrne:
This letter is to inform you of an area of unstable material located in the vicinity of MP 321 on
SR 101 in Mason County. Attached is a map of the area along with property owners names
and property descriptions furnished by Mason County.
A landslide in this areas was first identified in the late 1970's when it became noticeably
active, and continued to move until 1981. At that time, occasional patching of the roadway
was required.
During the winter of 1994-1995, significant rainfall occurred in the area, and numerous
landslides were activated or reactivated on the west side of the Hood Canal on SR 101. The
Eldon landslide at MP 321 was one of the slides that was reactivated.
The roadway in the vicinity of the landslide has dropped several inches requiring maintenance
patching in two places approximately 200 feet apart. A geotechnical investigation has been
initiated and completed. The Olympic Region is presently awaiting the completion of the
stability analyses along with the recommendations for mitigation of the existing landslide.
This unstable land mass may affect some or ail of the parcels of property shown on the
attached map.
We will keep you informed of the progress Df our study. Feel free to call me at 357-2653 if
further information is required.
Sincerely,
_&
