SECTION A. 8. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Recent winter storms have resulted in extensive amounts of gravel being washed down
Shumocher Creek. This gravel has accumulated where the creek empties into Mason
Lake. As a result the creek has established a new channel around the gravel deposits.
This has resulted in erosion of the playfield area and undermining of the park's flagpole.
The purpose of this project is to reopen the original channel for a distance of
approximately 180 feet, and to restore the park area damaged by the channel change.
Approximately 1200 cubic yards of gravel would be removed. All of the gravel would be
disposed of on-site (within the recreational park boundaries) or on Simpson Timber
Company property located across from the park's main entrance.
To minimize impacts to water quality and fish life, excavation of the gravel deposit from
the original creek channel would begin five feet (±) from the original point of discharge to
Mason Lake. The gravel deposit would then be removed to a point approximately five
feet from the point where the creek now deviates from the original channel. This will
allow the vast majority of the work to be conducted "in the dry." The final two steps
would be (1) the removal of the "plug" at Mason Lake, and, (2) conclude with the removal
t0e of the "plug" within the creek, allowing the creek to return to its original channel. All
work would be accomplished with an excavator.
Included in the project is the placement of riprap bank protection/stabilization along both
sides of Shumocher Creek from the vicinity of the Park Ranger's residence to the
existing foot bridge (a distance of approximately 300 feet).
Also included in the project are three enhancement activities designed to improve fish
habitat. Rock groins would be placed at 25 ft. intervals, on alternate sides of the creek,
from the beginning of the new riprap downstream to the existing footbridge. Two to three
rows of willow or alder shoots (2 ft. min. height) would be planted along each side of the
creek from the beginning of the riprap to the point where the creek empties into Mason
Lake. Three root wads would be placed randomly within the stream, again between the
beginning of the riprap and the point of discharge. Placement of the willow or alder
shoots and the rootwads would be coordinated with the Washington Department of Fish
and Wildlife.
