One detail which is unfortunately at times considered insignificant and at other times completely neglected is bracing. This critical component must be provided wherever and whenever specified in the truss design for the buss to perform as intended. Because a brace for a truss member is critical to performance of the individual truss, it is specified on the truss design. Additional types of bracing may be required for the proper functioning of the entire truss system both during installation and in service. This type of bracing is designated and specified by the building designer. The strength of any member subject to an compression load (F) is dependent upon its resistance to buckling. See A & B. If two members of the same material have the same cross sectional area and shape, the shorter member will have more resistance to buckling. Obviously, a 2x4 member 3'0" long has much greater stiffness than a 2x4 member 18'0" long. From this exaggerated example, one can readily see that the resistance of a member to buckling is a function of its length. One can also readily observe that an unbraced member always buckles through the lesser dimension of thickness or width... See A & B. The lesser dimension ( i.e. the thickness) of most chord members is usually well braced by the sheathing. Howewex, resistance to buckling through the width must be evaluated. Web members subject to compression forces often require bracing to prevent buckling through the thickness. One of the more effective methods of increasing a members resistance to buckling is to decrease its effective buckling length. See G This method is a very efficient system of providing resistance to buckling for webs in a series of identical trusses which are adjacent to one another. A continuous bracing member to be braced as shown in detail C and is anchored to some rigid point preventing movement of the bracing member. In instances where_adjacent trusses do not have identical configurations and in instances where truss spacing is excessive, a different method of providing lateral support for compression web members is required. "4'"bracing is very effective in these instances. The "T"section offers a considerable increase in resistance to buckling over that of a single 2x member. The strong dimension of the bracing member supports the weaker dimension of the braced member and vice-versa See D. An alternative to the "1- bracing method is the application of additional members) to the side(s) of a member to increase its buckling resistance. See E. This method increases the thickness of the weak dimension. It is nearly twice as difficult to buckle two members as it is one. When the two members are connected together the resistance to buckling becomes even greater. Because of the importance of properly braced compression members, we urge that all purchaser of trusses are advised to the necessity for bracing member and proper location of bracing members specified on the truss design.
