Mason County Civil Service Commission Meeting Minutes January 16, 2025 The regular meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chairperson Mark Nault Attendance: Mark Nault and Eric Gough Others: Tami Beyer, Kevin Hansen, and Becky Rogers Business: 1. Elect Chair & Vice-Chair Cmmrs. Nault/Gough moved and seconded to appoint Mark Nault as Chair. Motion carried unanimously. Cmmrs. Nault/Gough moved and seconded to appoint Mel Ferrier as Vice-Chair. Motion carried unanimously. 2. 2025 Meeting Schedule The Board reviewed and concurred with the meeting schedule to meet on the third Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. 3. Approval of Minutes: December 19, 2024, regular meeting minutes. Cmmrs. Nault/Gough moved and seconded to approve the December 19, 2024, regular meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously. 4. Open Forum for Citizen Input - No public comment. 5. Chief Examiner Update 5.1 Position Tracking - 11 vacant funded positions: Community Service Officer-1, Corrections Deputy-4, Deputy Sheriff-3, Evidence Technician-1, and Support Specialist-2 6. Sheriff's Office Update 6.1. Corrections - Chief Hanson reported two new correction deputies started this month and are currently in training. They are awaiting academy attendance. There are four vacant correction deputy positions and one vacant community service officer position. During the last budget cycle, the County Commissioners converted two of the five (5) Community Service Officer (CSO) positions into Corrections Deputy positions. There are three CSO positions for the jail. The Sheriff has authorized a drug dog in the jail. The handler, Keli Dunlap (Executive Assistant) holds an appointed position not governed by Civil Service. Mason County Civil Service Commission Meeting Minutes January 16,2025 Page 2 The department currently has a minimum of staffing to cover four shifts in the jail and can bring back inmates to Mason County Jail that have been outsourced to Nisqually. The Sheriff will meet with the County Commissioners to discuss budget issues to manage overcrowding and staffing limitations as booking restrictions might be considered until staffing levels allow for the jail to operate at maximum capacity. 6.2. Patrol - Chief Beyer reported that the patrol staff is in a leadership meeting. They have one new hire, one conditional hire, and three open positions. Deputy Parsons will be leaving the agency on January 27. The department is working with several deputy sheriff candidates in addition to a list of eligibles for the Evidence Technician position. 6.3. Support Staff - Chief Beyer reported two new hires starting on February 1, 2025. They are looking forward to a full staff. The commissioners were invited to attend a Sheriff's Office staff meeting. These meetings typically take place on Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m. 7.
