Grading Review Comments for GRD96-00009 - GRD Permit / Conditions - 12/28/2023
MASON COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR/COUNTY ROAD ENGINEER Shelton, Washington 98584 DATE: May 24, 1996 INTER-DEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATIONS TO: WARREN COLVIN, General Services - Plan Checker FROM: Alan A. Tahja, Public Works - Co. Hydr. Engr. SUBJ: Grading Review Comments NAME: Mason Benson Assoc. GRD 96-0009 Roger Denny Review of the LMP & RCL Checklist indicates that approximately 1850 cubic yards of soil is proposed to be graded in consequence of this proposal . ( 51x 501x 200 ' = 50, 000 & 50, 000 _ 27 = 1851 . 9 CY ) Because the drainage terminates at Mason Lake, water quality should be a concern, during construction and after completion. The proposal to riprap the new drainage ditch is endorsed by Public Works, particularly any ditch sections with gradients of 5% or more:. Vegetation/grass is an acceptable liner for ditches with gradients less than 5% . Because the drainage ditch accommodates runoff from parking areas and roadways, as much water quality treatment should be designed into the proposal as possible. The finished ditch slopes should be constructed with slopes of 2 : 1 (H:V) or less. If possible, the ditch should be constructed with a flat, wide bottom, with check dams constructed at 20 to 50 foot intervals to provide stilling areas to capture silt and sediment . Incorporating a pond providing a volume of "dead storage*" could provide additional water quality treatment. During construction, the grading area should be contained with silt fences or hay bales so that water escaping to its natural outlet, is forced to pool and provide a "quiet" area where sand and silts have an opportunity to settle out before the water leaves the site. When construction is completed, the finished bare soil should be planted with grass or other appropriate vegetation to help permanently stabilize exposed soils and minimize erosion and silt migration. The owner should be informed that he is responsible for protecting neighboring properties from being adversely impacted by his activities . * dead storage: a pond constructed with the outlet above the pond floor, providing a volume of water that must either infiltrate into the ground or evaporate.
