The Geological Assessment prepared for the proposed thinning of timber has been received
and reviewed by Public Works.
A review of the assessment indicates the assessment was written to determine if the proposed
timber thinning would have any adverse affect on slope stability. Steepest slope angles in some
areas may for short distances approach 25 per cent. These short steeper features are noted as
minor features. Season high water is found to the northeast of the harvest site. Seasonably high
waters do not occur at the harvest site as stormwater in the harvest site area flows through the
gravels to the northeast.
The author of the assessment has no objection to the proposed timber harvest based on
geotechnical concerns to destabilization of the existing slopes. It is also the noted in the
assessment that it is their opinion that a Geotechnical Report is not required for this FPA.
The assessment appears to address most County requirements required for an assessment.
Several points need to be clarified:
• The assessment notes that the harvest area is mapped as a Class I area. The opinion of the
Relative Slope Stability of the Southern Hood Canal Area. Washington is that Class I areas
are believed to be stable. The assessment author concurs with this opinion forthe slopes in
the area of the timber harvest. What is not noted is an opinion if on whether the proposed
development is within the landslide hazard area or its associated buffer or setback. Mason
County Resources Ordinance 17.01.100 E 4 Content of Geological Assessment.) Item (6).
An answer to this question should be provided.
• Mason County Resources Ordinance 17.01.100 E 4 (Content of a Geological Assessment.)
Item (9) states a site map to scale showing the property boundaries, scale, north arrow, and
the location and nature of existing and proposed development of the site. No site map was
provided as part of the geological assessment. This requirement should be fulfilled.
I recommend that this information be provided as an addendum to the assessment. The addendum
should be in letterform and be stamped by the by the licensed geologist. It is recommended that
the assessment be placed on hold until the information this received.
Please feel free to contact me at 724 if you have any questions regarding these comments, or if
you feel any features need further discussion or attention.
Sincerely,
John Sliva

Re: FPA2006-00020
Dear Mr. Schouviller,
This letter concerns the geological assessment for your proposed Logging Permit(FPA)
for the above referenced case number. I recently received comments back from John
Sliva of Mason County Public Works stating that the assessment that you submitted for
this project needs additional information before he can approve it. It will be necessary for
you to have Bradley-Noble Geotechnical Services create an addendum to the assessment
for consistency with Mr. Sliva's concerns.
Please find enclosed the memo from John Sliva describing the additional information that.
he needs to see in order to recommend approval. You will need to have Bradley-Noble
amend the assessments as specified. The amended assessment should be delivered to my
attention and I will have it forwarded to Mr. Sliva. Any technical question that Bradley-
Nobel may have should be directed to Mr. Sliva. My role in this process is to pass
documents between the parties and log the activities into the case record.
I am also enclosing a second memo from Mr. Sliva asking for a(engineered) stormwater
plan consistent with Chapter 14.48.140 of the 1992 WSDOE Stormwater Manual. Again,
I am just the messenger. Any technical questions should be addressed to Mr. Sliva(ext.
724).
ncerely,
Michael MacSems
