RE: Parcel#32127-53-00175
Address: 2100 E Mason Lake Road, Shelton.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Hartwell:
The Mason County Planning Department observed recent grading and clearing taking
place on the above referenced parcel,to the south side of your store. Staff posted a Stop
Work order on Nov. 30,2016 on the fence surrounding the graded area. The work being
conducted is located within the buffer of a Category I Wetland. The large peat bog
wetland and it's buffer are regulated by the Mason County Resource Ordinance Wetland
Chapter 17.01.070. I have enclosed a copy, with the applicable sections highlighted for
your information.
The buffer width around the wetland could be between 125' -250'. In order to determine
the appropriate buffer width, you would need to contact a wetland specialist. This
specialist may be able to assist you with the application that is necessary for a Mason
Environmental Permit,to develop within the buffer. The enclosed Wetland Buffer
Conditions states that- "Wetland buffers shall be retained in their natural condition.
Where buffer disturbance has occurred during construction, revegetation of the buffer
with native plant species may be required."
Prior to doing any work in or within the buffer of the Category I Wetland, a Mason
Environmental Permit must be approved by the Mason County Planning Department. No
Rather clearing into the buffer is allowed without an approved Mason Environmental
Permit or authorization that the proposed work meets the Exemption criteria of the
ordinance. See enclosed section titled- "(2)Activities Permitted without a Mason
Environmental Permit."
It appears that the fenced area may have been cleared in the past but staff would like to
confirm that you are aware that it is located within.the buffer of the wetland and
therefore, subject to the enclosed regulations. The buffer should be replanted with native
vegetation. The Mason Conservation District has an annual native plant sale that may be
t M
helpful toward the restoration along the wetland's edge. Please let us know what the
intent of this development is so that we are able to inform you of what permits may be
required by Mason County. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Aut A A' ll--
Grace Miller,Planner
