HomeMy WebLinkAboutMarine Resources Division Report - PLN General - 2/11/1999 Washington Department o/ FISH and WILDLIFE Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife PO box 1100, LaConner, WA 98257 To: Linda Gilbreath, Allyn, WA FROM: Dan Penttila, WDFW Marine Resources Division., LaConner WA J SUBJECT:. Forage fish spawning habitat data, Hood Canal and Puget sound south of Foulweather Bluff In response to your recent request, enclosed Iis a collection of recent WDFW Marine Resources Division reports detailing the known extents of herring, surf smelt and sand lance spawning habitats in south and central Puget Sound and Hood Canal. Our "1996 Forage Fish Stock Status Report" includes charts of the cumulative herring spawning grounds for each Washington stock as documented by our surveys during the 1972-1996 period. The only spawning stock this report does not include is one just discovered in early 1998 in the Elk river estuary of southern Grays Harbor. My 1995.reports on surf smelt/sand lance spawning beaches in southern and central Puget Sound were, by the present time, rather out of date, many new spawning sites having been found since 1995. To expedite your receiving material that was as up-to-date as possible, I revised and updated these chart sets, inserting additional charts of shorelines adjacent to those charted in the original reports where necessary, to fully depict all presently known spawning habitats of these species in these sectors of the Puget Sound basin. The texts of the reports remained unmodified. A new manuscript report was produced summarizing documented surf smelt/sand lance spawning habitat sites within Hood Canal. The scale of these charts is 1:80,000, rather than the 1:24,000 used in the south and central Puget Sound reports. As I note elsewhere in this report collection, it should not be assumed that the spawning habitat depictions in these reports are complete. Data were commonly collected on any given sector of shoreline on 1-4 surveys over a 2-year period. It cannot be assumed that all spawning sites were thus detected by our methodology. Some scattered sectors of shoreline within the area of these reports have received no WDFW forage fish spawning habitat survey effort as yet. Significant shoreline development projects should still include 2 timely forage fish habitat base line investigations on any upper intertidal sand-gravel beaches within the project sites, particularly if designs call for intrusions of structures or fill into the intertidal zone or the diminution or altering of the natural supply and long- shore drift of beach sediments. I hope this material is of use to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions. 01 BRITISH OOIUMalA 16 y --- —' — -- •Iaii.+c STATE Of 'MASNHuTOtI \KMi ,o,u VANC0L; VER `I " r♦ 15 L A N D Apt p w.... /law C • Q O • STR /T..\„ / `[ter/ of`. / •T 0E i '•Y.
