Box 167 Belfair , Wa. 98528 Attention: Mr. Chuck Jeu Project Coordinator Subject : Addition to Belfair Elementary School Gentlemen : I have completed a soils investigation for the new addition to Belfair Elementary School . A brief description of the investigation is presented in this report , together with indicated recommendations . PROPOSED PROJECT The new addition is shown on Plate 1 . The primary portion is a two-level addition extending westerly from the existing two classroom buildings ( in the hillside area now occupied by the concrete stairs ) . The lower level is to be at the lower parking lot level , with the upper level matching the floor levels in the existing buildings . j I There is also a much smaller single-story addition located on the north end of the existing building. Wood-frame construction with brick veneer is anticipated i throughout. INVESTIGATION !, Soils conditions in the addition areas were explored by making a series of seven backhoe-excavated test pits, at the locations shown on the Site Plan , Plate 1 . These were made on September 1 , 1988 , by Ron 's Earthworks of Tacoma. Terrain conditions and location of underground utilities seriously restricted locations available for exploration. Logs of the test pits are included in the Appendix . Soil descriptions on these logs are on a visual basis and are in accordance with the Unified Soils Classification System. Moisture and density conditions as described are qualitative only, with moisture conditions expressed on a dry-moist-wet basis . continued - i - Belfair Elementary School Addition W.O. 8843 September 16 , 1988 Page 2 INVESTIGATION , continued . Laboratory testing was limited to running two grain-size tests on random soil samples . Results of these tests are shown on the test data sheet in the Appendix . SOIL CONDITIONS Native soils encountered are primarily granular , in a dense condition. Soils at the upper level and over most of the slope are silty sands and gravels , and exhibit local very weak cementation. Soils on the lower level are dense sands and gravels . About two feet of native fill material was encountered between the two existing classroom buildings , and almost seven feet of very organic fill in the small addition area at the north end . o No groundwater was encountered in any of the test pits , which were made subsequent to a prolonged dry period . The site lies at the foot of a long slope , which has a history of relatively heavy groundwater seepage during wet weather. It is fully anticipated that groundwater may be encountered during construction in normal winter conditions . RECOMMENDATIONS The additions may be supported on conventional spread footing foundations. In all cases , an overload factor of 1/3 for seismic loads is considered appropriate. Footings at the lower level may be at frost depth , bearing on undisturbed native sand and gravel . Footings on this material may be designed for a maximum soil bearing pressure of 4000 psf , with a minimum footing width of 16 inches . Maximum anticipated settlement is less than 3/4 inches. Footings for the second story level may be on undisturbed native silty sand and gravel at a depth of two feet below existing ground . Footings at this level may be designed for a maximum soil bearing pressure of 4000 psf , with a minimum footing width of 16 inches . Maximum anticipated settlement is less than 3/4 inches. s continued - Grover C. Way, P.E. Belfair Elementary School Addition W.O 8843 September 16 , 1988 Page 3 RECOMMENDATIONS , continued . _ The north addition area should be prepared by removing all of the existing fill material and topsoil so as to expose the underlying silty sand and gravel . Depth of removal should be such as is required to expose undisturbed native soil ; r anticipated removal depth is on the order of seven feet . Backfill material should be clean well-graded sand and gravel conforming to the following specification: Sieve Size Percent Passing 4-inch 100 -inch 25 to 70 No. 200 10 max Percent Passing #200 _ Dust Ratio = percent Passing #40 2/3 max Sand Equivalent = 35 min Fill material should be placed in essentially horizontal lifts not exceeding eight inches loose thickness and compacted to at least 95 percent of maximum density , ASTM D-1557 . Footings may be at frost depth, bearing on the compacted fill . Footings should be designed for a maximum soil bearing pressure of 2000 psf; maximum anticipated settlement is less than 3/4 inches. Minimum footing width should be 16 inches . A six-inch granular subbase conforming to the structural fill specification above should be provided beneath all floor slabs . Prior to placing the gravel mat the subgrade should be compacted such that the top six inches is at least 90 percent _ of maximum density , ASTM D-1557 . The grannular subbase should be compacted to at least 95 percent of maximum density, ASTM D-1557 . At the lower level , a sub-floor underdrain should also be provided, at an invert depth of 18 inches below bottom of slab. The underdrain should be north-south at the approximate midpoint of the lower level . It should be slotted ( not perforated ) underdrain pipe , bedded and surrounded with pea gravel . Footing drains should also be provided at all exterior footings throughout the project . continued - Grover C. Way, P.E. Belfair Elementary School Addition W.O. 8843 September 16 , 1988 Page 4 RECOMMENDATIONS, continued . Backfill for basement walls for the lower level should be uncompacted pea gravel , with a slotted ( not perforated ) underdrain at the base of the wall . Basement walls may be designed for a lateral pressure of 35 pcf equivalent fluid pressure . The second-level floor system over the wall backfill should be structural , with the east end supported on a footing bearing on undisturbed native soil , approximately 23 feet west of the retaining wall . — I appreciate the opportunity to be of continuing service to the District .
