Dear Principal King,
T Per your request I made a site visit to the Belfair Elementary School to
ook at multiple trees you are concerned with. The trees are located in
two different areas. The first area is along the South side of the portables.
- * hese trees are within io' of the fence, hanging over it, between the creek
and the fencline. The lean of the trees is toward the portables.
The second location of trees is near the upper play area. Again, there are
trees within 1o' of the fence line that are posing an imminent threat to the
play area. These trees are located from the South East to the East and
,— Northeast fence line.
The trees of concern are a mixture of cottonwood, alder and maple. The
ground the trees are growing in is extremely wet between the creek, trail
,. and fenced areas. Overly saturated soil has compromised the roots of these
trees, increasing the failure risk. Given the proximity of these trees to the
portables and children's play area, coupled with the recent failure of
multiple trees in these areas, I recommend these trees be removed to
mitigate future risk.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

I am Ron Buckholt, with the Mason County Planning Department. I am in receipt of a tree removal
request dated 6/7/17 for the campus of Belfair Elementary authored by Richard Walsh of Darrel Emel's Tree and
Lawn Service. Unfortunately, we are in need of more information in order to consider the request. The
identified hazardous trees located along the southern property line of the school are located within an
environmentally sensitive area, e.g. regulated stream, as a result, the Mason County Resource Ordinance requires
a tree replacement plan be provided to replace said hazardous trees within the buffer. Given the number of
trees identified for removal, the Mason County regulations will require the planting of 6 new native replacement
trees within the subject buffer area. Please provide a site plan and narrative describing the tree type and
location of the 6 new replacement trees. Furthermore, the stumps of felled trees within the buffer shall be left in
the ground per adopted regulations. Once I am in receipt of the tree replacement plan,I can authorize the
proposed tree removal request. Thank you in advance.

Belfair Elementary Tree Replanting Plan, July 26, 2017 r
The North Mason School District is removing several hazard trees from the Belfair Elementary
School property.
In accordance with Mason County ordinance 8.52.170.E(5).e., which provides specification for
the mitigation of hazard tree removal, the two areas on the school property where hazard trees
li are being removed will each be replanted with three (3) Western Red Cedar trees. Western Red
Cedar was determined to be the ideal tree species for the soil, shading, and climate conditions
in the two areas of tree removal.
As shown on the map included [figure 11, three (3) trees will be planted approximately 12 feet
from the fence along the eastern perimeter of the playfield and approximately 50 feet from one
another. Additionally, three (3) trees will be planted approximately 20 feet from the fence
along the southern perimeter of the school site and approximately 50 feet from one another.
