RE: Vertical cut adjacent to property line
Dear Sharon and Jerry:
Thank you for meeting with me today so that we could discuss the slope issue that exists
on the property line running between Mr. Hughes' property and the cemetery property.
While on-site, I observed that the slope was cut historically to create the flat area on Mr.
Hughes' property. The cut is vertical and approximately 8' — 10' in height. The cut is
made into a bank that is apparently unstable, based on the geological composition of the
soil and visible sluffing that has occurred recently.
On the upland side of the vertical cut, large trees stand on the cemetery property. Mr.
Hughes expressed concerns regarding the possibility that the trees may pose a hazard to
his property, due to the apparent slope instability. Approximately eight years ago, Mr.
Hughes constructed an unengineered retaining wall adjacent to the cut in question, and
cabled the retaining wall to one of the trees in question.
While on-site, I determined that the cut slope in question meets Mason County's
definition of a Landslide Hazard Area. Activities undertaken within 300' of the slope are
subject to Mason County Resource Ordinance section 17.01.100—copy enclosed.
Section 17.01.100(D)(2)(c)provides guidance regarding removal of danger trees within
300' of the slope in question. Please review this section and contact me at(360) 427-

determines that the tree(s) in question are hazardous, please provide related
