Re: Wetland Delineation for a 10 acre parcel located on Probert Road, Mason County,
Washington. This parcel is located in a portion of the NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of
Section 28, Range 21 N, Township 2 WWM.
Dear Don:
I met with you and Gene Nye on May 3, 1995 to determine if wetlands were present on the
above referenced parcel. I found that the Northeast portion of the parcel was comprised of a
forested wetland associated with a large Lacustrine, Open Water/Aquatic Bed, Permanently
Flooded wetland located just Northeast of the parcel. See enclosed portion of the National
Wetland Inventory, Mason Lake Quadrangle.
You accompanied me as I delineated the wetland boundary as required by the Mason County
Interim Resource Ordinance (IRO) for all proposed Class IV logging practices. All wetland
boundary determinations were made using the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation
Manual as required by Mason County. This manual requires the use of the three wetland
parameter methodology(wetland hydrology, hydrophytic vegetation, and hydric soils)when
making wetland determinations. A combination of the Routine On-site, and intermediate
Methods were used to make the wetland boundary determination. The on-site portion of the
wetland was delineated with blaze orange flags numbered sequentially and with WB A written
on them. Fifty-one wetland boundary flags were used. Five wetland test areas were
investigated and marked with blaze orange and a white with orange polka dot flags. See
enclosed wetland delineation map and enclosed wetland test area data sheets.
A second, small wetland was identified approximately 40 feet Southwest of WB A-21;
however, this area is exempted from provisions of the IRO because it is under one acre in

size and is not hydrologically connected to the larger on-site wetland or to any other wetland
or stream. This area was separated from the delineated wetland by an upland berm. The
smaller wetland was marked in the field but not delineated because of its easily determined
small size.
The Mason County Interim Resource Ordinance requires a 50 foot vegetated buffer to
remain around all regulated wetlands with a 15 foot building setback from the edge of
the buffer. Buffers are measured perpendicular and landward from the delineated
boundary. In addition to the vegetated buffer and building setback, a 35 foot
management area shall be maintained. Activities occurring in wetlands that are under
one acre and hydrologically isolated are exempted from provisions of this ordinance;
however, any dredge or fill is limited to a one time cumulative total of 50 cubic yards.
