State Survey&Rating Bureau as per Mason County requirements. A copy of their review is included with this submittal. This accompanying letter serves to explain their comments and recommendations. 1. The recommended design density of.18 gpm per sq.ft. over the area of 3,250 sq. ft. is derived from the NFPA#13 supply curve for Ordinary Hazard Group 2 with a 30%increase of area for the use of a Dry Pipe System. The calculated.20 gpm over 1950 sq. ft. is also from the same NFPA#13 supply curve for Ordinary Hazard Group 2 with 30%increase for a Dry Pipe System. (NFPA#13 -Figure 1.24) 2. Sprinkler Plan Head Detail"A"shows the Pendant sprinklers with the return bends and insulation above the piping to provide the heated area required. 3. Drains are provided for all trapped piping as specified. 4. Present water supply available from Belfair Water Department is not sufficient at this time for the inside and outside hose allowance. The Belfair Water Dept. has indicated they will be extending the new water line up the hill to connect to their new well. This should provide an improved water supply to the site. 5. The 1,950 sq. ft. calculation area configuration on the submitted plan is correct. (NPPA 413 Figure A-6-4.4.1) 6. The grooved piping is thinwall, the threaded piping is either"XL"or"Dyna Thread". 7. Information on flow test provided by Mason County Fire Marshal. incerely, G John O.Baumgar ner,Pres. WASHINGTON SURVEYING AND RATING BUREAU 2003 WESTERN AVENUE, SUITE 300 SEATTLE, WASHINGTON 98121-2190 PLAN SHEET 1 of April 8, 1996 1 FILE COPY SUBJECT Westbay Auto State Highway 3 Mason Co. FPD No. 2 (Belfair), Washington The attached plans have been reviewed as follows: The following revisions or additions to the design as shown would qualify the protection for improved rates based upon information shown on these plans. Arrangements should be made to allow a representative of this Bureau to complete a cover inspection of all piping before it is concealed by building construction, and to witness tests of the local water motor alarm and water supply test pipe (main 2-inch drain). Completed copies of the Contractor's Material & Test Certificates for both the overhead and underground piping should be submitted to this Bureau. All piping, valves, and fittings should be listed and labeled by UL for fire service and installed, tested, and flushed in accordance with NFPA standards. A minimum temperature of 40°F must be maintained with a thermostatically controlled heating system in all areas containing wet pipe sprinkler equipment. 1. Recommend design be revised to provide a density of .18 gpm per sq. ft. over an area of 3,250 sq. ft. (with minimum 10 psi cushion below flow test curve) which is acceptable for ordinary retail stocks on wood pallets and/or shelves up to 12 feet in height. System design should be reinforced to adequately protect any increased hazards if there is any deviation from the occupancy such as rack storage, storage over 12 feet high, or storage of more than 15% plastics in content of packaging materials, etc. 2. Pendant sprinklers on dry systems must be installed on return bends and located in a heated area as specified by Article 3-2.2, Exception No. 2, of NFPA 13 (1994). 3. Operation of dry pipe system to be in accordance with Article 3-2.3.1 * and exceptions of NFPA 13, such that water reaches the inspectors test within 60 seconds after it is opened. Drains should be provided for all trapped piping in dry pipe system as specified in Article 4-6.3.5.3 of NFPA 13 (1994). Provide gang drains for multiple trapped branch lines. 4. Reserve 150 gpm for inside hose allowance and 500 gpm for outside hose allowance. Water supply should be improved to the site. 5. Configure fire area for calculations such that entire branch lines on either side of cross main are included. 6. The use of threadable lightwall sprinkler pipe is not recommended. If it is used, all threads must be gauged as required by UL listing. 7. Provide detailed information regarding location of flow test, number and diameters of outlets flowed, pitot pressures, whether or not stream straighteners were used, and static and residual pressures. Adjustments should be made in flow test to accommodate for changes in elevation.
