Dear Mr. and Mrs. Newbrey,
I would like to impress upon you once again the importance of the preservation of natural
vegetation along the stream corridor of the Union River. There are several extremely important
functions which bank side vegetation and in-water large organic debris provide. Bank side
vegetation in the form of trees, woody plants and grasses provide shade which in turn keeps
summer temperatures to a minimum which lowers the stress levels of juvenile and adult
salmonids. This vegetation provides food and cover. Side channels also provide important
overwintering habitat for some species of salmonid.
The Union River fishery has been severely impacted by residential, commercial and industrial
development. It is important to take a proactive role to lessen the impacts of all types of all
developments. You have the opportunity on your piece of property to make a difference. You
have the opportunity to help protect and preserve one the this State's most important resources.
It is important to understand that what we do on our property always has a downstream effect.
It is equally important to understand the ramifications of our actions and how they impact
resources of the state.
Chapter 7.16.080, Policy #6 of the Mason County Shoreline Master Program states, "
Residential development on shorelines and wetlands should be planned with minimum adverse
environmental and visual impacts.,..."
The Department requests that a buffer of native vegetation remain between the home and
channels of the Union River for the protection of fish life.
I respectfully request that you submit a clearing plan to me prior to any clearing on-site.

marked with white/yellow ribbon. These trees are to be left for the protection of salmonid
habitat and to minimize adverse environmental impacts pursuant the Mason County Shoreline
Master Program.
