Mark,
Thank you for your notification regarding the danger tree on your parcel at 7550 Grapeview Loop Rd,
tax parcel 12229-50-02032. Based on our discussion at the counter and you photograph, I accept the
danger status of this cedar tree without further investigation.
I am authorizing the felling of the tree in you photo provided that the post-felling conditions of section
17.01.1101.5 of the Mason County Critical Areas Ordinance (see below) are followed. Once you have
replanted your buffer with six native trees or shrubs,please photo-document that activity and notify me
when complete.

17.0 1.11 O.F. (5) The felling of danger trees within buffers [is exempt from an Environmental Permit]
providing the following conditions are met:
a) When it is demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Mason County Director of Community
Development or his or her designee ("Department")that an imminent threat exists to public health or
safety, or the safety of private or public property. Landowner shall provide to the Department a written
statement describing tree location, danger it poses, and proposed mitigation.
b) Should the imminent threat not be apparent to the Department(as danger trees are defined in Section
8.52.030),the Department may require the landowner submit a report from a professional forester or
certified arborist.
c) Before a danger tree may be felled or removed,with the exception of an emergency pursuant to
Section 8.52.240,the landowner shall obtain written approval from the Department. This approval shall
be processed promptly and may not be unreasonably withheld. If the Department fails to respond to a
danger tree removal request within ten business days, the landowner's request shall be conclusively
allowed.
d) Trees felled as danger trees shall be counted in the allowed amounts under Section 8.52.170(F)(4).
e)Mitigation as approved by the Department to include:

i. The planting within the critical area or its buffer a total of six new native trees, each a minimum three
years old. Should a report be submitted under subsection(5)b), it shall contain recommendations for
suitable replacement trees;
ii. Felled trees shall be left within the critical area or buffer unless a submitted report warrants its
removal to avoid spreading disease or pests;
iii. The trunk of the cut tree may be segmented,but should be left in as large of segments as possible to
provide habitat;
iv. The branches from the cut tree may be removed to control fire hazard; and
v. Additional mitigation may be required if three or more trees are to be felled on one property within a
ten-year period.

Just following up on our visit today. I will be felling the cedar tree in the photo I've sent with this
email. Reasons are,the tree is listing about 15 to 20' and it's possible for falling with Highwinds due to
the fact most cedar trees in this area and property have been rotten on the inside. There are plenty of
children living next-door and a few houses down that play on the beach. The roots are pushing up my
deck and steps as you have seen in the pictures. The roots are heading toward my foundation under my
cabin.

Subject: Felling cedar tree
Just following up on our visit today. I will be felling the cedar tree in the photo I've sent with this email.
Reasons are, the tree is listing about 15 to 200 and it's possible for falling with Highwinds due to the fact
most cedar trees in this area and property have been rotten on the inside. There are plenty of children
living next-door and a few houses down that play on the beach. The roots are pushing up my deck and
steps as you have seen in the pictures. The roots are heading toward my foundation under my cabin.
