Bariekman Chairman, Mason County Board of Commissioners Mason County Courthouse Shelton, Washington 98584 Dear Commissioner Bariekman: Re: :Eason County Shoreline Variance Permit #146 (Mr. Walter Schall, Applicant) The Department of Ecology has reviewed the above referenced permit to con- struct two (2) decks onto an existing single family residence located over water on Hood Canal near Union. The project includes an 8'x24' canti- !a_%-red deck on the front of the home and a 3'x2O' deck to the side of pie :_ouse. proposed larger deck on the front of the home is an addition to an existing enclosed deck. This proposed addition will encroach beyond the common line of other existing decks built on nearby residences. We find this portion of the proposal inconsistent with the Master Program and criteria for granting a variance and Lust disapprove this 8'x24' deck addition. The proposed smaller deck on the side of the home allows access from the carport to the residence and will not extend further waterward than the existing residence. This part of the proposal appears consistent with the :faster Program and criteria for granting a variance. We therefore approve the portion of the permit which authorizes the 3'x2O' side deck. This approval is given pursuant to the requirements of the Shorelines Management Act of 1971. Other federal, state or local approvals may be required. The Shorelines Management Act of 1971 provides that a request for review before the Shorelines Hearings Board may be filed within thirty days from the transmittal date of this partial approval. Guidelines for filing of a request for review are enclosed. r 4 !ha, tr`y , Sincerely, ►Mailed 8 2, to the capY of this: Persns and C;' t /r'r i Aao o Po staqe Elmer C.
