As per the Mason County Shoreline Code, Alderbrook Creek shall be dredged of alluvial sediments to alleviate flooding and facilitate channel clearance for fish passage. Approx. 50 cu/yds of alluvial sediments shall be removed and stored (off-site) for use in future stream or beach restoration projects. Work shall be done during dry weather in August, before fall chum or coho salmon return to spawn. Work shall be done from the road by a vacuum truck and with hand tools. The stream shall be dewatered by diverting flow thru the existing SR Hwy 106 culvert, using a pump and portable culvert. The stream shall be screened above the pump inlet to prevent the intake of fish. Emergency streambank protection shall be installed using woody debris, as per the HPA provisions, along approximately 60 feet of eroding streambank. An engineered wood footbridge shall be installed over Alderbrook Creek. The bridge shall be approx. 35 feet in length, and the footings shall be located outside of the floodplain. The bridge shall be constructed of untreated cedar with concrete footings. Stream restoration shall involve approximately 150-feet of Alderbrook Creek, upstream and immediately south of the HWY 106 culvert. Where it is feasible, the streambank on both the east and west sides shall be pulled back to a slope of between 2:1 or 3:1 and replanted with native trees and shrubs. Large Woody debris shall be added to create habitat and to store sediments in the incised upstream channel. Several natural sediment traps shall be made accessible by small machinery for periodic cleaning (with hand tools) by creating paths off an existing trail.
