Dear Mr. Bechtolt: As requested, we conducted a reconnaissance level survey of the above properties to determine if mass wasting events have been active or are likely to occur on the above lots . This letter will present our observations and opinions based on this site survey and on our research. These Short Plats are located in the Timbertides Development in the plateau area above the south shore of Hood Canal . Proposed lots 17A and 18D will include existing residences that have been constructed on the north side Windstar Road and are at the crest of the north slope down into the Hood Canal . Lot 17B may have a potential building site on the north side of Windstar which would result in a residence being constructed in the top of the slope area. If this area is to be used for construction, a detailed geotechnical report addressing slope stability and drainage issues should be prepared once the location and type of construction is identified. Referring to Plate 1 of the Mason County Water Supply 96090901 Page 1 of 2 -^ C ✓ r 96090901 Page 2 of 2 Bulletin 29 , prepared by the Washington State Department of Water Resources and in cooperation with the U.S . Geological Survey, we find the geology of this area identified. Soils in the north facing slope are indicated as Vashon age advance outwash units with the upland area as being Vashon subglacial till . Slope stability in the area is generalized in the Coastal Zone Atlas for Mason County, Washington, map MA-9 which indicates the north facing slope as being of intermediate stability and the upland area as stable. Based on our field observations, we concur with these finding on apparent slope stability. With the exception of lot 17B already discussed, we found the rest of the lots in the proposed Short Plat subdivisions to be in the upland area south of Windstar Road in the area of low relief with a very gentle slope up to the south. Soils exposed are interpreted as being Vashon recessional outwash deposits of sands and gravels . We expect that these deposits are relatively thin before the very dense and highly overconsolidated subglacial till is exposed. Slopes in the area of proposed subdivisions are not in excess of 10 degrees . It is our opinion, based on our site survey and research, that the area proposed for subdivisions is not in a landslide hazard area as defined by ordinance or the geologic sciences . There is no indication of slope instability in the upland area. If you have any questions, or if we may be of additional service to you and your clients, please contact us at our Olympia office.
