UNDERSTANDING "R" VALUE Questions have been asked: "What is "R", what does it mean?" Thermal Resistance, or "R", is a measure of the ability of a material to resist heat flow. This number or "factor" will differ for different materi- als. When known, the "R-factors" of all the components making up a building section can be added together to obtain the total thermal resistance, the Total R-Value, of the section, a measurement of the insulation value of the wall. This method of determining "R" value does not take into consideration thermal short circuits or compression of insulation materials that can occur during construction. The calculated "Total-R" may indicate a greater heat resistance value for a home or building envelope than may actually develop in the finished structure. For example,a 2x4 wood stud wall with 3-1/2" thick batt insulation does not actually develop a Total R factor of "R-13". The studs placed on 16" centers have limited insulation value and actually create a thermal short circuit, decreasing the"R-13"value by approximately 18%to R-10.7 according to ASHRAE. There is a 3-1/4" thick batt insulation rated at R-11 which similarly j develops only R-9.0. Also, this method of calculation does not take into consideration the energy loss due to air infiltration, typical with this type of construction, which further reduces the wall's insulation effi- ciency. As mentioned, thermal resistance will vary with different materials. The insulated wall mentioned above reflects the "R" value created by the millions of dead air spaces in the fiberglass insulation. A concrete block has very limited insulation value with an "R" value of 2. While it has some mass and the cores could be considered "Dead air space," it is also porous and loses its insulation value through air infiltration. To be effective as an insulated wall, the cores in the block should be filled with concrete for the additional mass effect and a supplementary insulation material such as 4 inches of foam board added in order to obtain an approximate insulation value of R-19. UNDERSTANDING "OUR" VALUE Questions have been asked: "What makes a home built with the 3.10 System more valuable? Why does a 3.10 home feel so good?" The occupant comfort level or "feel" of a home can be affected by the many ' different types of construction materials used when a building or home is being constructed. The 3.10 Forming System's expanded polystyrene (EPS) ` material is very important for its insulation qualities and because its formed, contoured shape generates both material and labor savings as well as greater strength. However, there are many other benefits that add to the value of the 3.10 Wall System. The concrete in the 3.10 wall plays an important part in the comfort "feel" of the home. The thermal mass effect of the concrete levels out the peaks and valleys of the temperature changes that would be experienced in a new home constructed to new energy standards. It is impossible to stop the movement of heat energy - it can only be slowed down. It is the mass of the concrete in the 3.10 System that also helps slow down the heat gain or heat loss of the wall and these changes that do occur are very slow and gentle. Heat, as energy, radiates in all directions and heat always seeks cold. The insulation in a refrigerator for example,is to keep the heat out-not the cold in. Because heat energy as hot air rises, the attic or roof areas must be well insulated also. However the wall insulation too is critical and must adequately control the radiant heat energy movement through the walls. This is why the EPS insulation value and mass of the 3.10 Wall System differentiates it from typical wall construction. The Foam Form has been thermographically tested with an average reading of R-28 (it varied from R-25 to R-32). Uncontrolled air infiltration plays an important part in an occupant's comfort or discomfort as well as in energy losses. "A drafty, loosely constructed home changes its volume in the range of 1 air change per hour. An average of new construction built to good energy standards is from 1/4th to 1/3rd air changes per hour. "Super Insulated"homes generally test at less than 1/5th air changes per hour. Your 3.10 home with less than 1/10th air changes per hour is foRM e: tight. Tight homes are the most comfortable and use the least energy. Contrary to common belief,it's easiest to control indoor air quality in a fight home. Perhaps what's most impressive about this house were some of the qualitative characteristics: it's quiet, sound absorbing atmosphere; ideal humidity and fresh air feeling, plus the warmth of the basement." This is a quote from a letter from the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation after they had performed a Blower Door Analysis on a 3.10 Polysteel home. But, the proof of the pudding is in the eating! 3.10 Insulated Forms con- structed a ranch style Model Home of 4,707 sq.ft.in the Omaha,Nebraska area during the summer of 1991. The home is of insulated forms construction from the top of the footing to the eave line. The attic is well insulated (R-50) using cellulose insulation. In order to accurately measure the energy required to maintain the residence at a constant 72°,a gas meter was installed in the supply line, directly in front of the furnace and an electric meter was installed in the air conditioner circuit. These meters measured only the energy used for heating and cooling the home. The information regarding thermal mass, insulation values of the forms, the tightness of construction and air infiltration, are all important to the environ- mental"feel"of the home, but the phenomenal energy savings as indicated on the attached, accurate meter records, truly makes eating the pudding worth- while! © Copyright 3*10 Insulated Forms, L.P., 1992 f < 11INSULATED FORMS, L.P.
