On our initial inspection of the bridge, we found that the main glu- lam beams and some decking had suffered some dry-wet rot. The beams are no longer good for the code live loads, thus the association has closed the bridge for pedestrian traffic. The new beams and decking would be treated to better resist moisture problems. We only plan to replace the section of the bridge as marked on the enclosed drawing (original drawing by KPFF Engineers dated 1 /23/76) . We are proposing to do the following as maintenance of the existing pedestrian bridge : 1 . Remove old handrail 2 . Unbolt the old bridge structure as marked on the print 3. Rig and remove old bridge structure ( 2 parts) 4. Cut up and haul debris 5. Assemble replacement bridge from new materials including glulams , decking , handrails, and bolts, 6. Provide barricades, flaggers, and crane rental . 7 . Paint new portions 8. Member sizes and other details will be based on the enclosed drawing. Again we will use treated glulams and decking, if they can be painted adequately. We may also call for some flashing between the glulams and the decking. All metal fastenings such as the major glulam hangers should be able to be be re-used. The contractor has indicated that the damaged portion of the bridge can be unbolted and removed by crane and then the new section lifted into place. This method of construction would only impede traffic for approximately one hour. Traffic can be detoured at Dalby Road to McReavy, or through the rear of the Blue Heron Property through the now locked gate. We are currently working out this detail with Ed Sharp from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) . We will coordinate with WSDOT on their requirements, however, all other miscellaneous permits will be handled by the contractor doing the maintenance. Sin y, n w L Herrick
