Merila, P.E. L 501 School Road Aberdeen, WA 98520-7935 (360)532-7060 October 5, 2003 Memo To: Dave Murnen 7920 East SR 106 Union, WA 98592 Re: Building Permit Application No. BLD2003-01324 You are in the process of repairing and replacing rotten logs at the above referenced address. You have shown me the original 1933 architectural drawings that show the logs were pinned together at approximately four foot centers with 5/8 inch diameter pins. The new construction is being supplemented with ten and twelve inch timberlok screws placed at three feet on center. These screws have an ultimate shear strength of 2995 pounds, allowable normally being one third of that value, which is equivalent to the original pins, whose shear value is approximately 1000 pounds. Since you will be providing a closer spacing than the original, and splines will be provided at all window openings, it is my opinion that the repair is a better construction than the original. I have read your scope of work for the repair and do not perceive any lateral or loading problems associated with the proposed half log system being described. If I can be of further help, please advise. Ron Merila ➢ H. Half logs are to be no less than 3"thickness. Logs are to be fastened using construction adhesive and Timber-lok screws. EM-Seal re-expanding foam will be placed between logs above and below those being repaired Half log repair will not jeopardize existing pin placement.
