First Attention : Don Brush Aberdeen,WA P . O . Box 578 98520 Shelton, WA 98584 RE. Bulkhead repair at: sec 24, twp 22, r 3 Mason Dear Don, Thankyou for the onsite visit of January 26th. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a narrative of the repair process of our bulkhead, specifically as it related to the decision to use or replace the lowest (3) rows of logs. The two top-most logs were removed by trenching behind the bulkhead, then chain-sawing and prying between the layers. Several strong backs with peewees, bars and saws made clean work of this job . None of the backfill soils ever made contact with the tide waters . Many of the original metal drift pins had to be cut off with a power cutting wheel . Not being able to remove these 62 year old pins was our second clue that the lower (3) logs might be very worthy of reusing. The first clue was their stalwart visual appearance . The final clue was driving in a few test pins . From there, having pre-drilled the upper log, it was all we could do to drive 30"x 3/4" zinc coated rebar spikes into the logs below. In trying to account for our good luck, we decided that these logs were inundated at most every tide and were impervious to all but toritos and sand blasting wave action . This, in our minds, defined mean " high tide . " The location of the "dead-men" was determined by excavating the original materials and replacing them. We added one more log than the original to prevent winter storms and exceptional tides from removing any fill . Our next door neighbor, Al Kane, donated the materials needed for filling the balance . It was clean glacial fill from just across the road . There is a sloping ramp like area at the east end of the bulkhead . This material would be used to fill behind the proposed new terraced pathway. Please see the original cross section print for this detail . We feel this will also help to support the highway edge and prevent erosion . I hope this will adequately describe our process for you to come to the same conclusion we did on the site . Our obvious intention has been for this bulkhead to last as long as the one be o e it and no amount of labor or material would have been par d to t end . Sin rely D S . Murne I
