MASON COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CHECKLIST 2
11. Give a brief, complete description of your proposal, including the proposed
uses and the size of the project and site. There are several questions
later in this checklist that ask you to describe certain aspects of your
proposal. You do not need to repeat those answers on this page. (Lead
agencies may modify this form to include additional specific information on
project description.)
As per the Mason County Shoreline Code, the Alderbrook Creek/Hwy 106
culvert and the creek's pools off both ends of the culvert will be dredged of
alluvial sediments to alleviate flooding and facilitate channel clearance for
fish passage. Approx. 30 cu/yds of alluvial sediments will be removed and
stored (off-site) for use in future stream or beach restoration projects.
Work will be done during dry weather in August, before fall chum or coho
salmon return to spawn. Work will be done from the roadside or
streamside, using a track excavator and/or a vacuum pump truck. The
stream will be dewatered by diverting flow thru the existing SR Hwy 106
culvert, using a pump and portable culvert. The stream will be screened
above the pump inlet to prevent the intake of fish.
The four (4) danger trees are Douglas fir. They will be cut down by a
professional tree cutter. The removed trees will be replaced by immature
native trees at a ratio of six to one (6 new for every 1 tree removed).
All activities are within the 100-year flood plain. The nearest waterbody is
Alderbrook Creek.
12. What is the location of the proposal? Give sufficient information for a
person to understand the precise location of your proposed project
including a street address, if any, and section, township, and range, if
known. If a proposal would occur over a range of area, provide the range
or boundaries of the site(s). Provide a legal description, site plan, vicinity
map, and topographic map, if reasonably available. While you should
submit any plans required by the agency, you are not required to duplicate
maps or detailed plans submitted with any permit applications related to
this checklist The site is located off Hwy 106, south of Union on the
south shore of the Hood Canal. Section 33, Township 22N, Range
03W. The legal description is: SUNNY BEACHPCL 1 OF BLA#04-58.
MASON COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CHECKLIST 3
B. ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:
1. EARTH-
a. General description of the site (circle one): Flat, rolling, hilly, steep
slopes, mountainous, other.
b. What is the steepest slope on the site (approx. percent slope)? Less than
10 percent in the work area.
C. What general types of soils are found on the site (for example, clay, sand,
gravel, peat, muck)? If you know classification of agricultural soils, specify
them and note any prime farmland. Sand and gravel.
d. Are there surface indications of history of unstable soils in the immediate
vicinity: If so, describe. No.
e. Describe the purpose, type, and approximate quantities of any filling or
grading proposed. Indicate source of fill.
The Alderbrook Creek culver will be dredged of alluvial sediments to
alleviate flooding and facilitate channel clearance for fish passage.
The culvert was improperly installed and lacks the energy to flush
itself of sediments. It becomes extremely dangerous if it doesn't flow
properly during high precipitation events. The danger trees are old
and unhealthy and therefore are potentially dangerous.
f. Could erosion occur as a result of clearing, construction, or use: If so,
generally describe. The WDOE's Best Management Practices will be
followed during construction to prevent water pollution or
sedimentation, along with the WDFW's HPA provisions.
g. About what percentage of the site will be covered with impervious
surfaces after project constructions (for example, asphalt or buildings)?
The project will not add any new impervious surface to the site.
h. Proposed measures to reduce or control erosion, or other impacts to the
earth, if any:
MASON COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CHECKLIST 4
when the project is completed? If any, generally describe and give
approximate quantities, if known. Emissions from any heavy
equipment use will be minor.
b. Are there any off-site sources of emissions or odors that may affect your
proposal? If so, generally describe. No.
C. Proposed measures to reduce or control emissions or other impacts to air,
if any: Work to be completed as quickly as possible.

the site (including year-round and seasonal streams, saltwater,
lakes, ponds, wetlands)? If yes, describe type and provide names.
If appropriate, state what stream or river it flows into.

2) Will the project require any work over, in, or adjacent to (within 200
feet) the described waters? If yes, please describe and attach
available plans.
Yes.
3) Estimate the amount of fill and dredge material that would be
placed in or removed from surface water or wetlands and indicate
the area of the site that would be affected. Indicate the source of fill
material.
None.
4) Will the proposal require surface water withdrawals or diversions?
Give general description, purpose, and approximate quantities if
known. No. Work will be done in late summer, when stream
levels are low.
MASON COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CHECKLIST 5
the area of the site that would be affected. Indicate the source of fill
material.
None.
4) Will the proposal require surface water withdrawals or diversions?
Give general description, purpose, and approximate quantities if
known. No. Work will be done in late summer, when stream
levels are low. The danger trees will be removed after all
required permits are procured.
5) Does the proposal lie within a 100-year floodplain? If so, note
location on the site plan. Yes, the proposed project site is on a
stream and the waterfront.

1) Describe the source of runoff (including storm water) and method of
collection and disposal, if any (include quantities, if known). Here
will this water flow? Will this flow into other waters? If so, describe.
WDOE's Best Management Practices will be followed during
sediment and tree removal, and the WDFW's HPA provisions
MASON COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CHECKLIST 6
will be strictly adhered to. In-stream work will be done in
August or September, when stream flows are low. The trees
will be removed as soon as all required permits are procured.

generally describe. No.
d. Proposed measures to reduce or control surface, ground, and runoff water
impacts, if any: WDOE's Best Management Practices will be followed
