Dear Mr. Hong:
The Department of Community Development has received a report of concern that the
Airport Grocery has no handicapped parking space provided in the parking area around
the store and gas station at 11900 No. U.S. Highway 101, Shelton (at the intersection
with Shelton Springs Road). When the Airport Grocery received a building permit in
October 2000, the standard permit condition, added by the Department of Community
Development, was included in the commercial permit issuance stating that certain
parking spaces would be provided in a parking lot and that one handicapped parking
space be provided closest to the building entry, that this space be ramped to the entry,
and that a sign with International Symbol of Access be installed at the head of this
space. That space and sign were present when the final permit inspection for the
building was completed on September 19, 2001.
In order to confirm the concerns raised about the handicapped parking space and sign, I
made a visit to this property on April 18, 2007 to determine whether such handicapped
parking space and the needed sign were present. At that visit I found that no
designated handicapped parking space was provided, as no space was marked with a
symbol painted in the parking space paved area nor was a sign affixed onto the building
or attached to a post in front of the parking space. Photographs were taken to confirm
these observations.
To remedy these concerns, Mason County requests that you complete the following
actions to re-establish the required handicapped parking space at the Airport Grocery
property:
(a) Install a metal sign with International Symbol of Access on a metal or wooden post
at the head of the parking space closest to the building entry.
(b) Paint an International Symbol of Access in the center of this designated handicapped
parking stall to enable drivers in the parking lot to recognize this handicapped space.
(c) Since the handicapped parking space is a condition of the issued building permit, this
work shall be completed as soon as possible, with the date of compliance by no later
than Friday May 4, 2007. Please contact this office for on-site compliance inspection
when these actions are accomplished.
