The focus of the work was to determine the extent of regulated wetlands on site. All field work and reporting associated with this project was performed by Lee Boad. The following is a summary of methodology and findings. Technical data is attached. 2.0 MethodoloLry 2.1 Field Review A field review of the above referenced property was performed on June 12 of 2004. Review consisted of the following: 1) Reconnossance throughout the parcel to identify suspected wetlands. a. Suspected wetlands included areas dominated by vegetation types typically adapted to wetland conditions, or areas that appear capable of seasonal inundation. 2) Routine determination completed for each suspected wetland. a. Soil characterization, analysis of hydrological indicators, vegetation characterization. 3) Mapping of study plots in relation to property lines. A site walkthrough was first conducted with the landowner to identify suspected wetland zones. Suspected wetland plots were flagged for later routine determination. " 1 2.2 Wetland Delineation Wetland delineation followed a routine methodology based upon the Washington State Wetland Identification and Delineation Manual (1997) requiring positive indicators of wetland soil, hydrology, and plants. Wetland hydrology was determined through observation of field indicators and conditions dug in pits within the study area. Presence of hydric soil was determined by soil conditions in several pits dug around the suspected wetland. Soil inspection included comparison with the Munsell Color Charts (1992). General soil characteristics were derived from information contained within the Soil Survey of Mason County, Washington (1960). Occurrence of wetland vegetation was determined through species identification, estimation of dominance and then assignment of wetland indicator status. Indicator status was assigned based on the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands (1996). 3.0 Results The property consists of a forested area with a vegetative overstory dominated by big leaf maple (Ater macrophyllum),and western red cedar(Thuja plicata)with a diverse understory comprised of beaked hazelnut (Corylus cornuta), vine maple(Ater circinatum), salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), indian plum (Oemleria cerasiformis) and sword fern (Polystichum munitum). Four plots were sampled within a small ravine located on the parcel. One small patch within a sample plot was identified as having a prevalence of vegetation types tolerant of wetland conditions. Dominant wetland vegetation types identified within this area (150sq ft) included salmonberry (rebus spectabilis) creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens), stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), and Pacific waterleaf(Hydrophyllum tenuipes). No other areas within the site appeared capable of supporting wetland conditions. Landscape gradient within sample plots ranged from 5%-200/o, which increased towards the northwestern portion of the parcel. The soil mapped within the parcel is Alderwood gravelly sandy loam, which is a well-drained upland soil common throughout Mason County. Soil identified within two of the three sample plots fit this description while soil identified in other plots did not. Neither plot sampled upheld sufficient indicators to qualify as wetlands. Indicators of seasonal soil saturation were observed in the southern most plot, however, no field indicators of hydrophytic vegetation or surface inundation during the growing season were identified. The plot containing a prevalence of wetland vegetation types was underlain by soil with a chroma of 2 and no mottling. Most vegetation types within this plot were not strong 2 indicators and therefore could not be used to presume wetland hydrology. No hydrological indicators were identified. 4.0 Conclusion A wetland delineation has been completed of the subject parcel applying methodology required by the Mason County Wetland Ordinance. Four plots were identified and investigated within the subject parcel. Neither of the plots supported positive indicators of soil or hydrology and only one fulfilled the vegetation parameter. A parcel drawing is enclosed showing all study plots in relation to property lines. I trust this information is sufficient for your needs at this time.
