It allows a repair facility Owner, General Manager, Supervisor or Technician to review the key environmental practices and quickly determine any areas of concern. There are some environmental areas that are not addressed in this checklist, such as underground storage tanks and gasoline tank filling which are uncommon for most repair facilities. The Checklist procedures are primarily for repair or recycling facilities and cover well over 90% of the most common compliance issues. How to Use It's best to take both the S/PZ Supervisor's course and the S/PZ Pollution Prevention Training first. This will give you the confidence and technical background to understand environmental compliance specifics. After completing the courses, print out the Checklist and walk around your facility. The checklist will help identify almost everything you see in a common repair facility. If you want more detail on any specific area you can go to the CCAR website at www.ccar-greenlink.M or to the EPA's website at www.epa.gov. Circle and Make Notes Circle the responses on the right side of the page and make notes for improvement. Also look for the "waste stream" coming from your facility. Go to the trash cans and dumpsters and dig through. This will tell you volumes about your current practices. Look at Everything for Waste Reduction A walk around the shop is an opportunity to go beyond compliance. Unnecessary waste is costly. Is water running that doesn't need to be? Are lights on that could be turned off or put on a timer? Could you add a tool to recycle and reuse solvents or compress cardboard for resale? Are aluminum cans (and bumpers) going in the dumpster when they could be segregated and recycled? The point: Are there parts of the current waste stream that could be handled differently? Better? Save Money? Technicians Can Help IF Trained You may find that technicians aren't complying and are not trained. This will be obvious using the checklist and by looking through trash cans and dumpsters. Technicians and others may be throwing things away that they shouldn't...without your knowledge. The wisdom of training all the technicians on S/p2 is that they will know exactly what to do and what not to do. They will become assistants in compliance rather than contributing to the problem.
