The request is to remove trees within a wetland and its buffer because the trees create a hazard to a-irport operations as stated within your 3/14/13 letter. This letter authorizes the removal of the trees with the condition proposed that the trees will be cut down at their base and remain on site as large woody debris for the wetland ecosystem. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you. Sincerely, 140'a Grace Miller, Planner DEPT OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PORT OF SHELTON AVIATION I INDUSTRIAL I MARINE March 14, 2013 Grace Miller Dept. of Community Development Mason County PO Box 279 Shelton WA 98584 Dear Ms. Miller: The Port of Shelton, having completed an extensive Airport Obstruction Survey, has been advised by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)to immediately remove all obstructions to the approach end of Runway 23 that have been declared an "airport hazard". The obstructions in question are trees located in a wetland on Port of Shelton property east of highway 101 and west of Shelton Springs Road. The specific trees in question are numbered and marked on site. RCW 14.12.010 Definitions defines"Airport Hazards" as any ". . . tree . . . which obstructs the airspace required for flight of aircraft in landing or taking-off at an airport or is otherwise hazardous to such landing or taking-off of aircraft". RCW 14.12.020 further defines Airport Hazards contrary to public interest, ". . . if of the obstruction type in effect reduces the size of the area available for the landing, taking-off and maneuvering of aircraft thus tending to destroy or impair the utility of the airport and the public investment therein." Mason County code allows for the removal of trees that create a hazard when there is an imminent danger to public health and safety without requiring an Environmental Permit, or a Forest Practice Permit. These hazard trees as identified in Exhibit A(photo) have been determined to be obstructions to the Airport Flight Pattern. The trees will be cut down at the base and remain on site as large wood debris for the wetland ecosystem. No attempt will be made to remove or replace these trees because of the potential of recreating the problem in the future. The fact that these trees present an eminent hazard to the flight operations at the Airport warrants immediate action.Your timely attention to this request would be appreciated.
