I understand that these were the plans for the issued building permit. These plans show that the floor joists for the upper deck are to be supported by 6X12 assumed DF#1 beams. I understand that a 5 1/2" x 10 '/2" Glu Lam Beam was substituted. Based on : Deck Load 60#/sq ft Live Load 10#/sq ft Dead Load Contributing Load on beam: 340#/Lineal Foot Beam Span: 12.75' Bending is the governing force. Section Modulus for beam: 6x12 DF#1 Fb= 1350 Section Modulus= 121.23 5 'h x 10 '/z GLB Fb=2400 Section Modulus=94.2 Section Modulus Required: Moment max: 340 x 12.75 squared/8=6,909 S req'd=Mmax x 12/Fb =6906 x 12/2400=34.53 in cube Therefore: 5 'h x 10.5 GLB has S greater than what is needed required, so beam is ok. It is acceptable with this office to Substitute the GLB noted above for the sawn beam noted above.
