("Tax Identification Number 12206-11-00060). See Figure 1. Vicinity Map for the approximate location of the study area.. The property is located in the northeast quarter of Section 06,Township 22 North, Range 1 West WM (Figure 1 Vicinity Map). The entire ownership is nearly rectangular in shape,and is 4.03 acres in size. The work has been requested in conjunction with site planning for a replacement Single Family Residence(SFR)to be constructed centrally within the parcel. GENERAL SITE CONDITIONS The ownership is accessed via Highway 106, which makes up the northern property boundary. The majority of the property is vegetated with an overstory of douglas fir and big leaf maple, with an understory consisting of swordfern, salmonberry and salal. A SFR is located within the central portion of the property with associated outbuildings and residential landscaping. Topography throughout the developed portion of the parcel is generally flat with moderate slopes. The eastern and western edges of the property include ravines with associated stream corridors. METHODOLOGY The onsite streams were classified using the stream typing system outlined in the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 16.222.030, adopted by Mason County. The stream typing system is divided into four types of streams identified as Type S, F,Np and Ns. Type"S"water is a designated shoreline of the state. Type F water is a channel both accessible to fish and connected to a fish habitat stream. "Dish habitat" means habitat which is used by any fish at any life stage at any time of the year, including potential habitat likely to be used by fish which could be recovered by restoration or management and includes off-channel habitat. Stream segments having a PARCEL 12206-114W60 WETLANDISTREAM RECCONIASCANCE January,2012 Page 2 defined channel of 2 feet or greater within the bankfull width in Western Washington; or 3 feet or greater in width in Eastern Washington; and having a gradient of 16 percent or less are presumed to have fish use(WAC 16.222.030). Type Np water is nonfishbearing perennial channels,and type Ns water is nontishbearing seasonal flowing channels. Wetland determination followed the methodology outlined in the Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Region(Version 2.0)U.S. Army Corps of Engineers May 2010. WAC 173-22-035 states delineations should be done according to this manual and supplements. This became effective March 14,2011. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Mason County Soil Survey The soil type mapped by the Mason County Soil Survey within the approximate parcel location is identified as Ib-Indianola loamy sand, 5 to 15 percent slopes. The Indianola series are excessively drained, droughty, brown soils of the uplands. They have developed on hummocky and rolling ridges from glacial drift that consisted of loose, porous sand. Soil types mapped in the vicinity of the parcel are Alderwood gravelly sandy loam (Ab) and Everett gravelly sandy loam (Eh). See Figure 4, Mason County Soil Survey for the soil map and detailed information about the mapped soil type. National Wetlands Inventory The USFWS NWI map (online wetlands mapper) shows no wetlands mapped within the vicinity of the subject parcel (Figure 3. National Wetland Inventory Map). The nearest mapped wetlands are located approximately 300 feet north of the subject parcel, and are associated with Hood Canal. The stream mapped by the DNR (discussed below) is a tributary to this mapped wetland. Department of Natural Resources Water Resource The Department of Natural Resources Water Resource Map shows one stream within the approximate location of the subject parcel (See Figure 5. DNR Water Resources Map). The stream is mapped as containing fishbearing habitat (Type f), and appears to be located within or near the western property boundary. According to the DNR Water Resource Map, the stream originates from two sources approximately one mile south of the subject property, and drains into Hood Canal approximately 400 feet north of the subject property. FINDINGS Two streams are associated with the subject property along the eastern and western sides. The western stream, mapped as type f by the DNR as a fishbearing stream, was verified to contain fishbearing habitat, based on size and gradient criteria according to WAC 16.222.031. Photo 1.Western Stream Corridor The eastern stream is supported by seasonal flow and characterized by a defined channel less than two feet in width. Such waterways meet the WAC 16.222.031 criteria for Type Ns stream. According to section 17.01.040 of the Mason County Resource Ordinance, Type Ns streams in Mason County require a buffer of 75-feet with an additional 15-foot building setback. Eastern Stream Corridor,channel circled in red. Given the proximity to the proposed building location the eastern stream corridor was inspected for wetland conditions. The only indicator identified was the presence of salmonberry, which although it can be a wetland indicator, is most likely present due to the sandy soil conditions rather than seasonal inundation. The subject soils are well drained and consistent with the mapped soil type, Indianola loamy sand. The study area does not exhibit indicators of wetland hydrology or hydric soil and supports many vegetation types common to upland habitats. Therefore, no areas on the property meet criteria for a wetland according to the local,state,and federal criteria. Given the sire and conCguration of the property there appears to be adequate space available to accommodate additional construction and development while meeting all stream related butter and setback requirements. SUMMARY This report verifies the presence of two jurisdictional streams associated with the subject property. No areas meeting wetland criteria are present in proximity to the proposed building area and none were identified on the property during the field review. They have developed on hummocky and rolling ridges from glacial drift that consisted of loose, porous sand. The sand came mainly from acid igneous rocks. The annual rainfall ranges from 50 to 70 inches,and the native vegetation is mainly Douglas-fir. Indianola loamy sand, 5 to 15 percent slopes(lb).-This is the dominant soil of the Indianola series. Everett gravelly sandy loam, 5 to 15 percent slopes (Eh) The Everett series consists of somewhat excessively drained, pale-brown gravelly soils. They occur as incxtensive gravel ridges on the glacial moraines or, more commonly, as fairly continuous outwash channels between ridges of Alderwood soils. They have developed upon assorted glacial till and outwash material.The rainfall is 45 to 60 inches a year.The vegetation is mainly drought- resistant madrone, manzanita, and kinnikinnick. Everett soils are droughty because the loose gravel and sandy subsoil and substratum offer little resistance to downward movement of water. Alderwood gravelly sandy loam,5 to 15 percent slopes(Ab)is the most extensive,soil of the Alderwood series. It occupies undulating to rolling mortines.The Alderwood series consists of brown, well-drained, upland soils. They have developed from mixed gravelly glacial till dominated by acid igneous rock. The imbedded gravel is mainly granite and quartzite. Rainfall is 45 to 60 inches a year.The native vegetation is a dense forest consisting almost entirely of Douglas-fir and a dense understory of salal, Oregon-grape, vine maple, and huckleherry. Northeast of the Hood Canal the understory is mainly rhododendron.
