Grey water discharge to existing drain field system

Dear Rhonda
Pursuant to our meeting and discussion concerning additional grey water discharge/disposal
into the existing septic/drain field system from the New Addition to the MC Fire District#3, 1 am
providing herewith the requested information for your file.
As discussed,the additional connections to the existing system will be one dedicated washing
machine and rinse water from the new decontamination rinse shower. Both the washing
machine and the shower will be used only by returning firefighters from a fire believed to have
contained contaminatedthazardous materials in the fire and smoke particulates. I requested
from Chief Graeber of Fire Station #3, that she review the 2023 call record to identify the
number of fire responses that may have contained contaminated materials that would have
required decontamination rinse procedures. After review of the Statlon records, it was
determined that a decontamination shower would have been utilized 9 times in the past twelve
month period. Assuming an average shower rinse lasts for a 10 minute period and the shower
is using 15 gallons/minute, 150 gallons of water would be discharged Into the contaminated
waste holding tank for testing. If the water tests positive(contains contaminated materials) the
water will be pumped from the tank and disposed of by a licensed hazardous waste disposal
service. If the water tests negative(no contamination) it will be released into the on site septic/
drain-field system. Assuming that ALL of the water can be discharged into the existing system,
an additional drain field-load of 1500 gallons per year( 10 uses times 150 gallper use) would
occur for each firefighter. The Chief projected that 2 firefighters would require decontamination
for each call therefore increasing the projected discharge to 3000 gal/year. As discussed, this
is an insignificant amount of additional loading to an existing drain-field that is designed to
accommodate 150 people in the Community Hall that is occupied at capacity, lass than 10
Imes a ear for 4 hours . Therefore, it is our understanding per our discussion that no
mode icatron and/or addition to the exiting drain field system will be required.
Enclosed herewith are the following documents:
1. 2004 Mason County septic tank/drainfield permit application including system design
criteria and calculations (for 150 people) and the final approved certification of installation.

Notes to: Addition to Mason County Fire District N3 Station
The following notes shall be added to and become a part of the Permit and Construction
Documents for the Mason County Fire District p3 Addition
1. Building plumbing, heating/ventilation, and electrical systems design , construction, and
permit drawings (if required)shall be the responsibility of the General Contractor. Systems
final design shall be in accordance with the project architectural plans and outline
specifications set forth herein.
2. Contractor to provide a tankless hot water system. Decontamination shower controls shall
be set to deliver water to the shower at no more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit at a pressure of
50 to 70 psi.
3. Building grey water must be pumped to the existing sewer line connection shown on the
drawings. Grey water disposal will require a pressure sewage/effluent system containing a
holding tank with access ports, sewage pump with float switch, PVC discharge piping,
electrical connections, alarm system and final connection to the existing septic drain-field
system.
4. Decontamination rinse water shall be separate from the building grey water piping system.
Water from the decontamination shower shall be conveyed directly to a 500 gallon waste water
storage tank. Storage tank shall have a test port for testing water samples and an access
hatch for pumping if water tests contaminated. If water tests non-contaminated it can be
discharged into the grey water system. Tank shall be connected either by gravity flow or
ejector pump to the grey water system set forth in paragraph 3 above. Water discharge
between the tanks shall be controlled either by an in line valve remotely monitored and
controlled from inside the building OR if an ejector pump is used, it must be manually
controlled from inside the building. Holding tank must also have necessary floats, alarms and
remote fill gage inside the building for monitoring purposes. Contractor shall be responsible for
final design and permitting of system. System design shall be done by a licensed septic/sewer
system designer approved by the Mason County Health Department.
5. Plumbing and electrical points of connection are shown on the Architectural Site Plan and
are provided for informational purposes only. It is the responsibility of the Bidders to determine
and verity the connection points and include associated costs in their bid proposals.

Thank you for the information. From what I understand from your letter the current usage is as follows:
- Community Hall,up to 150 people 10 times a year for 4 hours or less.
- What is the daily usage?Two firefighters?How long are their shifts?Spending the night?Can you tell me
about the daily usage?
Proposed
- Sporadic usage up to 3,000 gallons/year for rinsing
I will need to figure out what size tank you will be able to install.This is the first time we have reviewed something
like this.Typically for a holding tank,we require 1200 gallons but that may not apply for this situation.Since you
only expect to produce 300 gallons per rinse,it may not make sense to have such a large tank. Do you know the
turn around time on testin—gI What if you have to put out another fire before you get the results back?1 see many
fires that happened on your log within days of each other so it may actually be smart to put in a bigger tank.

Enclosed herewith is the letter and the background information for the Mason County Fire District#3's
Station proposed addition. Please note(enclosed in the attachments)that we will be requiring the
contractor to provide a holding tank and ejection pump system design by a licensed designer acceptable
to Mason County Health. The system will require an ejection pump system for conveyance into the

exiting sewer system. A gravity flow system will not work due to the existing grades. The Notes provided
have been added to the permit drawings(that will be resubmitted tomorrow)which will also included the
changes by requested by Todd in the Building Department.
Please let me know if there is anything else that we need to provided at this time.

Thank you for your quick response to the enviromental review of the Mason County Fire
District#3 permit application. Attached herewith is the information that you requested
regarding existing and projected new flows to the existing septic system. As you know,the
septic design and installation was based primarily on the Community Hall addition
approved and completed in 2004. The system was designed based upon the community
hall being used on a daily basis at an occupancy of 150 people. The actual use is far below
the initial design criteria.
I met with the Fire Chief to review the community hall rental log for 2023 to establish the
number of uses and occupancy. (See attached summary). The community hall was used
58 days in 2023 for a period of time/use of less than 4 hours.Also Included is the the Fire
Station staffing that is listed in the attachment and my survey of the existing fixture unit
connections to the existing system plus the proposed additions of the DEDICATED
decontamination shower and washing machine. Please let me know if additional
information is required.
The Operations and Maintenance inspection plus septic tank pumping, is occurring today
by Dana's Pumping. They said they would have an inspection report done and to you by
Friday. Please let me know if you do not recieve it.

requirements. He will be reviewing the design parameters and provide the required system
design that you requested. He said that he would be in contact with you directly. I

Thankyou for all this additional information.It is very thorough and useful.Septic systems are designed for daily
flows so there are only a couple situations a year where you might be exceeding the design flow of 450 GPD.
The single firefighter staying there for a 24 hour period I would consider to be similar to residential flow of 60 GPD.
The two additional staff that are there during the day would contribute about 26 GPD,using the EPA estimated
flows for an office employee of 13 GPD.
Thus,the daily use is about 86 GPD.
On top of the this,duringyour largest events with 150 people,you could be using up to 450 GPD just based on the
event alone.So for these two events you would need to be careful.
My recommendation would only to be obviously not send any water from the holding tank to your drainfield during
or directly after your events.You may consider some type of timed dosingto the rest of the septic system once you
determine it is safe for disposal on site. It sounds like you are working with Jim Hunter on your design of the holding
tank which is great.
I will add this information to your file and look forward to the tank permit application and your updated Operations
and Maintenance inspection.

MC Fire Station #3: Personnel and Loading Criteria
Station #3 is manned 24 hours/day seven days a week by a minimum of one firefighter. In
addition, the day shift at the office and station is comprised of the Chief and one additional
firefighter. There are sleeping quarters at the station for the firefighter working the 48 hour shift.
With three people working day shifts 5 days a week and one of the three working the 48 hour
