HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000/04/13 - Board of Health Mason County Board of Health Meeting Commissioner's Chambers Apri113,2000 Page 1 of3 MASON COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH COMMISSIONER'S CHAMBERS APRIL 13, 2000 The Mason County Board of Health was called to order on April 13, 2000 at 10:20 a.m. by Chairperson Cynthia Olsen with Board Member John Bolender and Board Member Mary Jo Cady present. ATTENDANCE: Cynthia Olsen, Chairperson John Bolender, Board Member Mary Jo Cady, Board Member Steve Kutz,Director of Health Services Debbie Riley, Environmental Health Services Director Dr. Mark Trucksess,Health Officer Carla Hyuck, Health Services Employee Mary Duncan, Reporter Mason County Journal Nancy Plews, Board Clerk CORRESPONDENCE: None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: John Bolender moved for the approval of March 2, 2000 minutes. Mary Jo Cady seconded. Olsen,Aye; Bolender,Aye; Cady, Aye. ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES: HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT: Dr. Mark Trucksess gave the Communicable Disease Report for March 2000. 1 case Hepatitis A at the Washington Correction Center. 1 Campylobacter 1 Malaria from a patient who had traveled to Mali and continued on medication. 1 Hepatitis B in a developmentally disabled person. Investigation for typhoid which turned out to be negative. There will be 2 more tests done to be sure it is negative, with a total of 3 tests to complete the series stated Steve Kutz, Director of Health Services. Dr. Mark Trucksess stated that he attended the Health Officer's Conference of Executive Leadership Forum in Yakima on April 6`i'and 7'. There was a discussion on notifiable conditions which are going to be changed,which will include Hepatitis B, Chronic Hepatitis B, Acute and Chronic Hepatitis C will probably be added, and also Invasive Group Strep Diseases. There was talk about forming a TB risk poll with no conclusions on cost over-runs in caring for TB patients. Currently there is 6,000 latent TB cases immigrating into the State of Washington yearly. Currently there are 250,000 cases in Washington now. Bio Terrorism, Immunization of children, and a Tobacco Plan was also discussed at the conference. Update on E-Coli 1577 infection in Battle Ground Lake. In further study, the fish were found to not be positive but duck feces continue to be positive. There has been a report that the MMR vaccine causes autism but there is no scientific bases for that. On April 6'h there is to be a hearing on vaccine safety. A report on Water Quality on Puget Sound was sent out. It is a discouraging report of increase in PCB's are rising. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ISSUES: WAIVERS: Steve Kutz presented. PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES: Steve Kutz introduced Carla Hyuck, Tobacco Coordinator. She read the Proclamation for Youth Volunteer Recognition Week, April 23 - April 30, 2000. Board Member Mary Jo Cady moved to approve and adopt the Proclamation of proclaiming Youth Volunteer Recognition Week as April 23 -April 30, 2000. Board Member John Bolender, seconded. Olsen,Aye; Bolender,Aye; Cady,Aye. An invitation was also extended to the Board Members to attend the Award Ceremony on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shelton Civic Center. The Board said they would attend. Mary Jo Cady said she would be unable to attend. Steve Kutz presented the Board with a proposal by Carla Hyuck for a Tobacco Summit for Thursday, May 18'h, 2000 from 1:00-4:30 p.m.. PUBLIC COMMENT: Mary Jo Cady stated that she would be unable to attend the May 4 meeting. Mary also asked Steve Kutz if they were working on a web site for the Mason County Health Department. Dr. Mark Trucksess' gave some suggestions for people to do the work for them.
