HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002/06/06 - Board of Health BOARD OF HEALTH PROCEEDINGS June 6,2002 Chairperson Commissioner Bob Holter called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. Attendance: Cmmr.Dist. 1, Absent;Cn=.Dist.2,Wes Johnson;Cmmr.Dist.3,Bob Holter. ATTENDANCE Dr.Mark Trucksess,Health Officer Steve Kutz,Department of Health Director Debbie Riley,Environmental Health Director Cindy Waite,Environmental Health Specialist Nancy Plews, Clerk Rebecca Wells,Mason County Journal,Reporter CORRESPONDENCE None APPROVAL OF MINUTES Cmmr.Baze/Johnson moved and seconded to approve the May 2,2002 meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously. B-aye;J-aye;H-aye. ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT: Dr.Trucksess,Health Officer reported the May,2002 Communicable Diseases as two case of Camphylobacter,one case of Salmonella,one case Hepatitis C,and six cases Positive PPD,which were all started on Latent Therapy. Dr.Trucksess reported there has been a Salmonella outbreak related to cantaloupe. Ten people in Washington State have contracted Salmonella due to the cantaloupe. The skin of the cantaloupe is where the contamination is. The fruit needs to be washed before being cut. Dr.Trucksess informed the Board there was an outbreak of Meningitis in the colleges. This is not uncommon for dormitories. He suggests that students that are going to college next fall and will be living in dormitories get the vaccination. The vaccination will prevent someone from contracting the virus. PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES Steve Kutz,Department of Health Director,informed the Board that West Nile Virus is expected to show up on the West Coast in year 2002. He also presented an update on Smallpox. He stated that his department is expected to receive posters for the walls of the Health Department so everyone is aware of smallpox looks like. The Health Department is expected to receive enough of'these posters to give them to all.of the local doctor offices. Steve Kutz talked about Bio-Terrorism and how smallpox could possibly be used as a source of terrorism. The preparation for Bio-Terrorism will be challenging because generally in regards to health it is harder to identify. He believes his communicable disease program is currently prepared but he is working on the statewide system that needs to be clearly identified. Steve Kutz is hiring someone in his department to directly work on the Bio-Terrorism local and statewide preparedness plan. Steve Kutz requested a proclamation from the commissioners for the Board of Health to declare a national HIV testing day in Mason County on June 27,2002. Cmmr.Johnson/Baze motioned and seconded the endorsement of a proclamation for HIV testing day to be set for ( June 27,2002. Motion carried unanimously. B-aye;J-aye;H-aye.
