Cindy Olsen, Board Member is absent. ATTENDANCE: John Bolender, Chairperson Mary Jo Cady, Board Member Steve Kutz, Personal Health Director Dr. Mark Trucksess, Health Officer Diane Zoran, Clerk CORRESPONDENCE: None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: No action. HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT: Communicable Disease Report for Month of August: 1 Salmonella 1 Camphlobactor 4 Pertussis (clinical diagnosis) Water System Alert Washington State has issued a "Notice of Order" for the following water systems: Hoodsport Winery Skipper John's No samples have been taken from these businesses, the cistern is leaking and has lots of potential sources for contamination, and there is a lack of management of the water supply. The order states that Hoodsport Winery must notify all users that the water may not be safe to drink and must be boiled or treated with bleach. Influenza There is an outbreak of influenza among the tourists and tour guides debarking from Canada to Alaska in the Yukon Territory. This outbreak has affected 1,600 people, with 40 some cases of pneumonia. CDC is now recommending travelers to this area that are 65 years or older and those with chronic medical conditions to obtain a flu shot before traveling to these areas. Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is a notifiable illness. There are 400 million people in the United States chronically infected, with 35,000 to 180,000 new infections occur each year. Infection is asymptomatic, 85% 1 of the people will develop chronic hepatitis and 60% develop cirrhosis. There are about 8,000 to Mason County Board of Health Meeting September 3, 1998 Page 2 of 3 10,000 death nationwide each year. There is not a test for acute illness of this disease but they do have a test for the chronically infected. Shellfish Infection There have been 2 cases of infection with Embryo Parahemolytic in shellfish, which mandated a July 301 commercial and recreational closure of a portion of Hood Canal, and also Totten and Skookum Inlets were closed to oyster harvest on August 3rd and 11t. HIV State-wide Council and Testing Activity Mason County tested 14 people and with no positives. State-wide there were 9,133 people tested with 72 cases of positive HIV identified which is about 28%. Fifth Disease Mason County has had an epidemic of Fifth Disease which may still be going on. It is a mild disease, which may last from a week to two weeks. It is caused by Parvo virus B19. It does hold a risk for fetuses. MEETING CHANGES: Board Member Mary Jo Cady moved to continue the Public Hearing for Service Fees to October 8th at 10:30 a.m.. Cady, Aye; Bolender, Aye; Olsen, Absent. Board Member Mary Jo Cady moved to change the October 1' board meeting to October 8th at 10:00 a.m. in the Commissioner's Chambers.
