HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000/07/06 - Board of HealthMason County Board of Health Meeting Commissioner's Chambers July 6, 2000 Page 1 of 2 MASON COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING COMMISSIONER'S CHAMBERS July 6, 2000 The Mason County Board of Health was called to order on July 6, 2000 at 10:05 a.m. by Chairperson John Bolender with Board Member Cynthia Olsen present and Board Member Mary Jo Cady absent. ATTENDANCE: John Bolender, Chairperson Cynthia Olsen, Board Member Dr. Mark Trucksess, Health Officer Steve Kutz, Director of Health Services Debbie Riley, Environmental Health Services Director Carla Huyck, Health Services Mary Duncan, Reporter, Mason County Journal Sonja Rau, Clerk/Transcriptionist CORRESPONDENCE: None APPROVAL OF MINUTES: None ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT: Dr. Mark Trucksess gave the Communicable Disease Report for the month of June 2000. 1 case of 1 case of Tuberculosis investigated - turned out not to be Tuberculosis. 1 case of 4 parasites (giardia, two different kinds of amoeba and tapeworms) from homemade sausage. Mason County has had one of the highest rates of Hepatitis A. Mason County has been approved to provide Hepatitis A vaccine for children through 18 years of age through the Vaccine For Children Program which is free immunization. It is not a free vaccine for adults. Recent CDC studies show 76 million episodes of food borne illnesses annually. Of these, over 300,000 become hospitalized and there are over 5,000 deaths. Fruits and vegetables appear to be the highest cause of food poisoning and most of it happens at home. Steve Kutz stated that the Public Extension Office usually runs articles on food preparation at home. John Bolender suggested that parts of this be incorporated in the Commissioner's county -wide newsletter that Mason County Board of Health Meeting Commissioner's Chambers July 6, 2000 Page 1 of 3 goes out with the PUD bills. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Waivers and Variance PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES THE TOBACCO SETTLEMENT: Steve Kutz reported that $15,000,000 going to the Department of Health and Counties for tobacco issues. Mason County was expecting to receive $50,000 up to a week ago, but are only going to be receiving $20,000. Mason County ranked 36 or 4th highest in the State for tobacco use and are receiving the base rate. Steve Kutz stated that he feels we need to launch a complainant. Karla Hyuck gave a report on the Tobacco Summit meeting. She stated that there had been two meetings of Tobacco Free Mason County. They had prioritize four areas in Mason County, which are: youth education, smoking during pregnancy, smoke free restaurants, and Because they are not getting the money they thought they were, they have narrowed it down to youth education and building a youth coalition. Training the youth on the youth coalition to present this to their peers and recruit help from the community. The meeting was adjourned at 10:29 a.m..
