ATTENDANCE: CORRESPONDENCE: MINUTES: WAIVERS: John Bolender, Chairperson Mary Jo Cady, Board Member Steve Kutz, Director of Health Services Debbie Riley, Environmental Health Services Dr. Mark Trucksess, Health Officer Mary Duncan, Reporter, Mason County Journal Sonja Rau, Clerk and Transcriptionist None None Presented by Steve Kutz. HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT: by Dr. Mark Trucksess, Health Officer Communicable Disease Report: Communicable Disease Report for the month of November: One case of Hepatitis A. One case of Hepatitis B. One case of Giardia Communicable Disease Report for the month of December. None We are currently in an epidemic of Influenza A Sidney, which was included in the vaccine. The vaccine is 80 to 90% effective. Some people will get sick from influenza even though they have had the vaccine, only their case is less severe. There are also 2 new drugs to treat Influenza A. One is an inhaled form of drug, called Relenza. Should be started two days within the time of getting the illness. Usually the flu virus peaks in February or March and those who want to get the shoots can still do so, even though it takes 2 weeks before it begins to work. Dr. Trucksess stated that his office has maybe 30 some left. Quarterly Report of Sexually Transmitted Diseases for 1997 and 1998 In Mason County in: 1997 - Chlamydia - 65 cases 1998 - Chlamydia - 74 cases 1997 - Gonorrhea - 4 cases 1998 - Gonorrhea - 5 cases 1997 - Early Syphilis - 0 cases 1998 - Early Syphilis - 1 case 1997 - Late/Late Latent Syphilis - 5 1998 - Late/Late Latent Syphilis - 6 1997 - PID - 2 cases 1998 - PID - 1 case 1997 - Genital Herpes - 16 1998 - Genital Herpes - 13 1997 - NGU (Gonorrhea) - 7 1998 - NGU (Gonorrhea) - 5 1997-AIDS-9 1998-AIDS-2 So far in 1999 no cases of AIDS reported. September Quarterly AIDS Tested Report: In Mason County 25 tested with 0 positive. State-wide 7,746 tested with 48 positive. Challenge to Constitutionality of Washington State Law: There was an attempted challenge to the constitutionality of Washington State Law concerning the intentional exposure of someone to HIV during sexual contact. The Appeals Court upheld the Law. In 1997 it was re-classified as a 1st degree assault. Tobacco Control Plan for Washington State: A copy of the tobacco prevention control plan was sent. Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in Washington State and is also the top priority of the Washington State Mason County Board of Health Meeting Commissioner's Chambers January 6, 2000 Page 3 of 3 Department of Health. Washington State has the most cost effective plan in the Nation. Letter from Chris Spitters: A letter was received from Chris Spitters, who is in charge of Infectious Disease for Washington State, asking that someone be designated for confidential reporting of HIV. Steve Kutz has been designated to be that person. Meeting Time Change: Mary Jo Cady brought up the question of changing the time and day of the Board of Health Meeting. It was decided to talk about this further. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: WAIVERS: Presented by Steve Kutz. Red Flagged Restaurant: There was a discussion about a certain restaurant that just opened in the past six -weeks in Shelton and has been shutdown twice; they also have a restaurant in Thurston County also. John Bolender stated he did not feel it was for the Board but the Health Officer to deal with. John also stated he was to meet with these people but will tell them they are to bring it to Dr. Trucksess's attention as Health Officer. The meeting was adjourned at 10:22 a.m..
