The Mason County Board of Health was called to older at 10:01 a.m. by Clnairpersoaa Wes
Johnson with Board Members :lerb Daze and Board Member Bob Holier present.

by all. George Nethercott's address was read by Chairperson Wes Johnson. A moment of
silence was observed by all.
CORRESPONDENCE: Nancy dews, Board Clerk, read a letter from the Pacific
Coast Shellfish Growers Association.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Herb Raze moved to approve the Minutes oldie Manly
12, 2001 Meeting.

Wes Johnson introduced the new member, Bob Holter, to the Board Of Health.
ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES ---
HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT by Dr. Mark Trucksess
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES FOR MONTH OF AUGUST:
2 cases of Campylobactor
7 total for the year.
1 case Rabbies Prevention Treatment for exposure to bats.
8 total for the year.
1 case Hepatitis A
1 case Hepatitis B
1 case Chronic Hepatitis B
1 case Active Hepatitis C
4 cases Chronic Hepatitis C
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are becoming prevalent in the County.
1 case of Latent Tuberculosis Therapy - Staff in the Jail and Juvenile Detention Facility.
CDC HEALTH ALERTS:
The CDC issued a Health Alert for Bio-Terrorism possibility. All of the County Health
Care Providers have been alerted to watch for unusual patterns of diseases.
A Health Alert was issued in Lewis County for acute Hepatitis A. A young man went to a
high school party and later tested positive for Hepatitis A.
RECALL:
A frozen brand of chili called SheriffBalock's Best Chili has been recalled.
INFLUENZA PRIORITIZATION ISSUED:
The Washington State influenza prioritization was issued. Those that are 65 years of age
and older, adults and children with chronic health problems may get their vaccine in October.
TETANUS VACCINE SURVEY:
A survey was done by the Health Department in Mason County. List can be found in the
Minutes Packet.

OTHER VACCINE SHORTAGES:
Meningococcal vaccine shortage also.
WEST NILE VIRUS:
A brief history was given by Dr. Trucksess, as well as symptoms for the West Nile Virus.
He stated that horses, mammals, wild birds as well as humans are susceptible to this virus. It is
expected to spread rapidly across the United States. The Department of Health is beginning to
conduct surveillance for Wes Nile Virus in birds, especially in crows and magpies.
MAD COW DISEASE IN U.S..
So far the United States is free of mad cow disease. It is spread by a protein - even in
cooked meat. There is a concern about dietary supplements, which contain a lot of protein
products and are shipped to the United States. One case has been confirmed in Japan.
SHELLFISH CLOSURES:
Dr. Trucksess brought to the Boards attention a map which shows the closures.
PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES —
Steve Kutz, Health Director, provided an update on the closure of the Health Department due to
a cleanup procedure. It is expected to be open Monday and no later than Tuesday.
PROCLAMATION:
Steve Kutz presented a Proclamation for the Mason County Walk Against AIDS set for
September 22, 2001 to the Board of Health. The current estimate of AIDS victims in the County
is 64 to 65. Not all are aware of having it.
Herb Baze moved to adopt the Proclamation for the Walk Against AIDS September 22,
2001.
Bob Holter seconded.

Steve Kutz introduced Mitch Johnson who is a member of the HIV/AIDS Council and on the
Board for the AIDS Walkathon. He gave a brief report on the HIV/AIDS Council and invited the
Mason County Board of Health to attend.

Jess Mossley of the Environmental Health Safety Program presented a Proclamation for National
Food Safety Month to the Mason County Board of Health.
Herb Baze moved to adopt the Proclamation for September, 2001 as the National Food
Safety month.
Bob Holter seconded.
It was moved and seconded to adopt the Proclamation for September, 2001 as the National
Food Safety month.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH WAWERS/VARIANCES —
Steve Kutz presented the waivers/variances to the Board.
OTHER — APPOINTMENT OF A NEW CHAIRPERSON
Herb Baze moved to appoint Bob Holter as the New Chairperson for the Mason County
Board of Health.
Wes Johnson seconded.
