The Masou County Board of Health was caned to order at 9:33 a.m. by Chairperson Wes
Johnson with Board Men ibeli• Herb Daze and Board Member Mary Jo Cady present.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE FOR JUNE:
1 case of Campylobacter connected to a store bought pizza.
1 case of Salmonella acquired in Germany.
2 cases of Rabies prevention.
3 cases chronic Hepatitis C's.
3 cases positive TB skin tests.
1 cases started for latent TB treatment with INH.
3 cases on directory observed therapy.

16 Clinic visits

Mason County is not the highest in STD's per -population. King County is the highest. Many
people have STD's and don't know it.
RABIES REPORT —
Rabies report was sent out with advise on pre -exposure to vaccinations with recommendation to
offer vaccinations to persons that are high -risk such as: animal handlers, certain laboratory

A dog or cat that has bit someone, should be incarcerated for 10 days. If they are healthy at the
end of that time, then there is no cause to worry. If they get sick, then head should be sent in for
examination. If someone is bit by a cat or dog that runs away and the attack is unprovoked, they
should get treatment. If someone it bit by a bat or wild animal and it is not caught, they should
get treatment. The cost of a rabies vaccination is about $150.00 per dose.
TETANUS SHORTAGE —
The Tetanus shortage is due to two companies quitting the manufacture of the vaccine. They are
recommending if you had a vaccine 10 years ago, then you can go one more year. A booster
should be given in the case of a contaminated wound if they have not had one in 5 years; in a
minor wound a booster could be given if it has been 10 years. For routine vaccinations of 7 years
and older, they are recommending waiting a year.
TATTOOING —
Tattooing is a way of rejecting middle-class values. Outside the United States tattooing has been

associated with the transmission of Hepatitis B and C viruses due to unsanitary conditions. In the
United States this has not been a problem. The CDC has stated that tattooing is not an important
factor in Hepatitis B or C transmission.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
WATER QUALITY POLICY AND PROCEDURES —
It was decided to postpone adopting these and have another briefing with the Commissioners to
go over them again.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH WAIVERS/VARIANCES —
Presented by Health Department Director, Steve Kutz.
