Report received from CDC of British Columbia:
There were 97, laboratory confirmed, cases of invasive group A strep - causes flesh eating
disease. This is 82% above what is normally reported for invasive group A strep. Two-thirds of
the cases occurred in adults, ages 24 to 54. Most serious infections occurred in Senior adults,
age 65 and older, and children less than 4 years of age. Fatality rate is 8.2%. From September
2001 to January 2002 there were 20 more cases of invasive group A strep reported - all on
Vancouver Island. Dr. Trucksess stated that he has seen a lot more strep in his practice in the
last month. The most people likely to get this invasive group A strep are drug users, people who
have had surgery, people with chronic diseases, and children with chicken pox.
CDC Report on pregnancy mortality was received by Dr. Trucksess.
256 women died of pregnancy related deaths last year (2001). The rate is higher for women who
are over the age of 38 years old and African -American women.
West Nile Surveillance Report:
Surveillance was through the Fall of 2001 in Washington State and included, 6 Eastside
Counties and 7 Westside Counties. In Mason County they found one mosquito that was
questionable and one mosquito was found in King County that carried the West Nile Virus. This
is the first time that this has been found west of the Mississippi River. A dead bird surveillance
was done also and submitted for laboratory analysis, which included 19 crows, 4 stellar jays, 1
American robin, 1 western gull, 1 crane, 1 varied thrush, and 1 starling. All birds tested
negative.
E-mail received by Dr. Trucksess:
An email was received by Dr. Trucksess, that there was less support for State Funding of Health
Care. They were warned that lack of funding could cost lives. Washington State Health is very
underfunded and there is lack of support.
Board Member, Wes Johnson, requested a separation of communicable disease reported from
WWCC and the County at large. Dr. Trucksess stated that this was possible.
