Commissioner Herb Baze called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. Attendance: Cmmr. Dist. 1,

ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES
Proclamation:
Mr. Ben Johnson, Health Educator invited the Board to Volunteer youth recognition night on
Wednesday April 28, 2004 at the Civic Center at 6:00 p.m. There will be 75 to 100 youth that
will be recognized for their volunteer work in the last year. Mr. Johnson presented the
Proclamation for National Volunteer Recognition Month and proclaims the week April 26-30 as
Volunteer Recognition Week.
Cmmr. Baze stated he attends the event each year and it is a great program for recognizing the
youth.
Cmmr. Johnson stated it was a highly commendable action to recognize the contribution of the
young people and to encourage them to continue the hard work and dedication to each program
they participate in.
Cmmr. Johnson/Baze moved and seconded to recognize April as Volunteer
Recognition Month and proclaim the week of April 26-April 30, 2004 as Youth
Volunteer Recognition Week. Motion carried unanimously. 3-aye; B-aye; K-absent.
Ms. Kim Klint, Mason Matters, stated water quality had been selected as an issue on a work plan
three years ago. The community came together and identified ways to bring all the efforts into a
consertive movement. A baseline of the water resources report was constructed to establish
goals in the community and to be able to continually come back to reflect and monitor progress
toward the goals. Ms. Klint stated National Drinking Water Week is an opportunity to promote
water quality. Ms. Klint presented a Proclamation for National Drinking Water Week as May 2-
May 8, 2004.
Cmmr. Johnson/Baze moved and seconded to proclaim May 2-May 8, 2004 as
National Drinking Water Week in Mason County. Motion carried unanimously. J-aye;
B-aye; K-absent.
HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT:
Dr. Trucksess, Health Officer reported for March 2004 Communicable Diseases cases; one case
Camphylobacter, one new case of Hepatitis C, two cases of Positive PPD and seven new cases
started on Latent TB Therapy. There are now a total of twenty-six patients receiving Latent TB
Therapy. There is a rash investigation in the Fred Meyer Bakery Department. Several of the
employees in the Bakery Department came down with a rash. The STD's reported for January
through March 2004 are twenty cases of Chlamydia, one case of Gonorrhea and three cases of
HSV.
Dr. Trucksess stated he has received a notice a contaminated nasal spray on the market and is
being recalled. The manufacturer stated the lot number being recalled is K4496. The nasal spray
has an expiration date of October 2006.
Steve Kutz, Health Department Director informed the Commissioners of an upcoming event that
will be held. The emergency preparedness planning has scheduled a tabletop exercise working
with Mason General Hospital and the Health Department and all the hospitals and health
departments in Pacific, Gray Harbor, Lewis and Thurston County as well. The exercise will begin
at 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. It will begin locally then move into region wide issues as the
exercise progresses. Contractors have been hired to facilitate the exercise at all the county sites.
The exercise date will be Tuesday June 22, 2004. Mr. Kutz stated he is aware June 22 is a WSAC
meeting date and that the Commissioners from all the counties will probably be unavailable for
the exercise. He does plan to remind the emergency -planning group of the conflict but is not
sure if the date can be changed.
PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES

ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
Ms. Debbie Riley, Environmental Health Manager presented a list of different ways everyone uses
Environmental Health services in their daily lives without knowing it.
Ms. Riley stated she had received a few phone calls regarding the January incident of illegal
dumping of sludge by D&E Septic from the sewage treatment plant at his own property. She
stated when KIRO 7 did their news article they used some file footage of AAA Septic Service's
truck, who were not involved in the situation at all but people were confused by the footage. Ms.
Riley stated she has been educating people that it was D&E and not AAA involved in the incident.
Ms. Riley presented an updated certified contractor list.
