Subject: Building Update 565 E. Mikkelksen Rd. Shelton, WA
Hi Mr. Kuzawa
I wanted to let you know in writing regarding the progress I have made on my building permit BLD2008-00832 at 565 E.
Mikkelsen Road,Shelton,WA 98584.
In October 2019,you and a woman came to my property for an inspection. I told you that I was going through a divorce
and my soon-to-be ex-husband was still living in my old house at 561 on this same property. I was living in our 30 foot
Prowler trailer behind the 565 house being built. You informed me that there would not be any future requirements for
inspections every 6 months, but to call you when an inspection was ready at a cost of$80. Also, you would be the only
one I should contact for any future questions or inspections.
On November 13, 2019, my divorce became final. My now ex-husband moved out, and I moved from the Prowler trailer
into the 561 house and started to organize everything. In April this year, I believe I called and left you a message about
some of the work I was doing. But, mostly it has been to clean up around the exterior yard of the 565 house and dispose
of items of no use or garbage. I have been working on a "TO DO" list and it just keeps growing. It is helpful so that I can
prioritize and focus on what needs to be done.
I had to take apart the garage door because it was not installed correctly and was not functional. I can now park my
Honda Fit and Dodge Ram truck in the garage, out of the weather. All material and garbage that was being stored
under the front and back porches have been removed and taken to the dump.
Several windows with wood or aluminum frames that were being stored against the back wall of the 565 house, as well
as other items, have been removed. The glass was removed and taken to the dump. The aluminum frames were added
to other aluminum stacked away from the 565 house. I plan to recycle all the aluminum at a later date. The wooden
window frames were set aside to be disposed of, at a later time.
I have taken inventory of all the materials I will be using to complete the 565 house. Some materials will be donated
because I believe they are not needed or I do not want them. For the most part, I have replaced tools that my ex-
husband took. What tools he left were trash or too rusty to use. Also, I had to spend a lot of time cleaning out the 561
house before I could moved in.
Now that the weather is changing, I plan to work more inside the 565 house. But, last year after a heavy rain, I noticed
that the basement was getting outside drainage in the back left corner that is up against the hill, despite a French drain
that was installed around the base perimeter stem wall before filling in with pea gravel. When I was cleaning up the
backyard around the 565 house, I found several rugs that had been laid down from the garage door to the Prowler
trailer. Apparently, over the years, the rugs became covered in dirt, grass, and small wild strawberry plants, and the
rugs seemed to have disappeared. I believe that, eventually, the rain was not able to drain through the rugs, and the
rugs became hard packed. The heavy runoff of rain and the slope went directly towards that corner of the 565 house
basement. Also, I could not find the opening of the French drain that exits to the front of the house, and there is no
ditch to deter this excess run off. I have removed all these rugs and taken them to the dump. I will be monitoring the
basement this winter in the hope that I have solved this problem. I will also be trying to find the exit opening that
should be close to the front of the house on the West side, and the stem wall is still open partly on that side due to drain
1
pipes from the house to the septic tank. Also, there are electrical lines and a water line connected to the 5th wheel and
the Prowler trailer(currently all shut off).
After you made the suggestion, I contacted an HVAC person who came out. We talked about the furnace for the main
floor, the attic furnace for the bedrooms, and the heating duct materials that I already have. He said that everything
was OK, except the furnace in the attic would need to be replaced as it is going in the wrong direction. I plan to remove
it, but keep it for spare parts as it is identical to the one for the main floor. He also said I could extend the heating ducts
into the Recreation room by reducing the size of the ductwork to a 6" pipe, rather than putting in a wood stove or any
electrical heat. He assured me that my heating ducts are sufficient in size. He suggested that I insulate the heating
ducts at the same time as they are installed. We talked about the intake for the main floor furnace, a new door to the
front of the furnace, and how it should all fit.
I have a stick that has been used to mark where to install the electrical boxes around the perimeter floor of the
main floor. I will use it when I to do all the upstairs bedrooms. The placement for the light switch's is easy. However,
the electrical in the kitchen is not complete, yet.
The drain pipe is mostly done and connected except for the bathroom to the Recreation room. However, I have not
checked to see if I need any cleanout access openings installed in the basement. I have taken measurements for the
washer/dryer,toilet,sink and full shower for the bathroom in the Recreation room. I am trying to figure the best way it
will all fit in the space already built, and how the drain pipe will go, and the direction.
I believe I have covered all that I plan to complete by the next inspection. I am open to any suggestions you may offer. I
am appreciative of your time. Also, I am requesting that you respond to me by email, so that I can respond to you in a
timely manner.
Respectfully yours,
Pat Haskell
Homeowner of 565 E. Mikkelsen Road.
