Upon our arrival, we noted that the foundation for the residence had been completely excavated and that the back, basement wall had already been poured. The front foundation and deck foundation still had to be formed and poured. The front foundation line was about 6 feet back from the break in slope, while the deck foundation was at or just beyond the break in slope. Based on observations during our site visit, we noted that most of the foundation excavation consisted of hard, unweathered glacial till. We probed the front foundation line with a '/Z-inch steel T probe and noted minimal embedment (less than '/z inch). In our opinion, the front wall subgrade soils appear firm and unyielding, and suitable to support the anticipate loads. The deck foundations, located at or beyond the break in slope, appear to be founded on glacial till fill. When probing the fill, we noted up to 4-inches embedment. We recommend that the deck foundations be deepened a minimum of 4-feet. This depth will ensure that the foundation extends into the deeper native soils and has a sufficient setback from the top of the slope. We attached a detail showing the deepening of the foundation. For the piers, we recommend 12-inch diameter drilled piers. These piers should have or exceed the typically residential bearing capacity of 1,500, but structural steel spacing and configuration should be confirmed by the structural engineer. It is my understanding that the county is requiring FOR approval/verification of the existing deck. On November 2nd, 2023 my associate Allen Rishel visited the residence to observe the deck in question. The deck is constructed with 2x8x1O'-O"joists @ 16" o.c., (3)2x8 beams on 6x6x8' posts @ —6'-6" o.c. w/ 12" diameter sonotube footings. See below for our recommendations. 1.
