FOUNDATION AND EARTHWORK NOTES
CODES AND SPECIFICATIONS
1— The work throughout shall comply with the 1997 edition of the
Uniform Building Code and the 1998 edition of the Standard Specifications
for Road, Bridge & Municipal Construction as jointly published by the
Washington State dept. of Transportation and the Washington state chapter
of the American Public Works Association. In addition concrete work shall
comply with American Concrete Institute publication ACI 301-96, Standard
Specification for Structural Concrete.
STRUCTURAL EARTHWORK
2— A building pad with dimensions to 10 feet outside all outermost
building and structure elements shall be prepared for foundation
construction in accord with these structural earthwork notes.
3— The pad shall be cleared of all above ground and subsurface
obstructions including vegetation, utilities, structures, spoils and other
foreign objects.
4— The pad shall be stripped of topsoil, non —complying fill material,
pavement and other unsuitable material. Upon completion of stripping, high
areas of the building pad shall be cut to the pad elevation called out on
the drawings. If no elevation is called out the pad shall be cut to an
elevation 9 inches below finish slab —on —grade floor.
5— Upon completion of stripping and cutting, and prior to filling, the
entire pad area shall be scarified to a minimum depth of 6 inches and
this surface compacted to a density of 90% in accord with appendix
chapter 33 of the UBC. The subgrade so established shall be approved by
the engineer prior to proceeding with filling or structure excavation.
6— Upon approval of subgrade, low areas within the pad shall be filled to
the specified elevation with free draining granular material placed and
compacted in accord with appendix chapter 33 of the UBC. Granular
material for filling shall be approved by the Engineer prior to placement in
the work.
7— Structure excavation shall be performed to lines and grades shown
on the plans. Over —excavation below bottom of footing elevations shall be
filled with structural concrete matching the class of concrete for the
footing. The bottom of structure excavations throughout shall be approved
by the Engineer prior to placement of footing concrete.
8— Backfilling of completed foundations shall be accomplished using free
draining granular material placed and compacted in compliance with
appendix chapter 33 of the UBC. Backfill shall be placed uniformly in lifts
on each side of the structure so as to preclude damage to the structure.
Backfill shall be placed to match the previously constructed building pad
elevation. Backfill material shall be approved by the Engineer prior to
placement in the work.
9— High ground water may be encountered during construction.
Establishment of subgrade; placing structural fill & structural backfill, and
concrete placement shall be done per these notes and specifications on
stable firm soil surfaces free of standing water. The Contractor's proposed
dewatering plan shall be submitted to and approved by the Engineer prior
to beginning work.
10— Structural earthwork shall be subject to grading inspection in accord
with section 3317 of UBC appendix chapter 33. Compaction testing at a
frequency and by persons approved by the engineer shall be performed on
the subgrade, structural fill and structural backfill.

STRUCTURAL CONCRET
11— Concrete work shall be performed in conformance with ACI
publication ACI 301-96, Standard Specification for Structural Concrete.
12— Structural concrete for footings, walls and pedestals shall attain a
minimum specified compressive strength (Vc) of 3000psi at 28 days and
contain a minimum of 470 lbs per cubic yard of type I, II Portland
cement. Structural concrete for slabs —on —grade shall attain a minimum
specified compressive strength (f'c) of 4000psi at 28 days and contain a
minimum of 564 lbs per cubic yard of type I, II Portland cement.
Concrete mix designs shall be approved by the Engineer prior to
incorporation into the work.
MATERIAL
(a) Water
Potable
(b) Aggregate Maximum size 20mm (3/4") for walls and slabs,
and a maximum size of 40mm (1 1/2") for footings.
(c) Anchor Bolts ASTM A307, sizes as noted on the drawings
13— Concrete for foundations shall be placed at a maximum slump of 5
inches. Concrete for slabs —on —grade shall be placed at a maximum slump
of 4 inches. Slump may be increased by the use of admixtures as
approved by the Engineer. Air content of concrete shall be 5% +/— 1%
14— Steel for concrete reinforcement, as called out on the plans, shall
be ASTM A615 or A616, Grade 60 deformed bars, ASTM A185 plain wire
fabric, or ASTM A497 deformed wire fabric. Field welding of concrete
reinforcing shall be in accord with AWS D1.4. The Contractor shall hove all
reinforcement welding procedures approved by the Engineer prior to
executing the work. Reinforcement shall have adequate supports spaced
not more than 4'-0" apart in any direction, and shall be firmly anchored
before concrete is placed. All anchor bolts (ASTM A307) and embedded
metals shall be located in plan and elevation to 1/8" shown on the
drawings. All metal insert surfaces exposed to concrete are not to be
painted.
15— The Contractor shall provide bending and placement shop drawings
for the Engineer's review and approval prior to reinforcing steel being
fabricated for the work. All reinforcing steel shall arrive at the worksite
cut, bent and togged; with tags easily matched to the approved shop
drawings. All wall reinforcement shall be continuous all around corners.
Reinforcing to be deflected not cut around inserts. All exposed external
corners shall have 3/4" chamfers. The minimum clear cover for
reinforcment, unless noted otherwise, shall be;
(a) Cast against earth
(b) Underside of slabs

All rebar hooks and bends shall conform to A.C.I. standards, typical,
(u.n.o.). All reinforcing splices shall be staggered so that no more than
50% of the bars terminate at the same point. Minimum embedment and
minimum rebar laps shall conform to A.C.I. code.
16— Foundation concrete shall receive a rough form finish in accord with
ACI Specification section 5.3.3.3.a. Slabs —on —grade shall receive a
trowelled finish in accord with ACI Specification section 5.3.4.2.c.
17— The Contractor shall submit and have approved by the Engineer his
proposed methods of protecting and curing placed concrete. The methods
proposed shall meet the specification.
18— Slabs —on —grade shall be placed over a 4 inch compacted granular
subbase approved by the Engineer. The subbase material shall have a
maximum particle size of 1 inch and provide a surface, after placement,
which will not become disturbed during placement of vapor barrier,
reinforcement and concrete. Slab thickness tolerances are plus 3/8 inch,
minus 1/4 inch.
19— The bottom of all structure excavations shall be approved by the
Engineer prior to placement of foundation concrete (footing or grade
beam). Formwork and placement of reinforcement shall be approved by
the Engineer prior to placement of concrete.
20— All structural and slab —on —grade concrete shall be inspected and
tested in accord with section 1.6 of the specification. The inspection and
testing agency shall be approved by the Engineer.
21— A bonding agent shall be used wherever new concrete is to be placed
against existing concrete. Bonding agent shall be applied strictly to the
manufacturer's specifications.
22.— Concrete shall not be placed on frozen ground. Concrete
curing in cold weather conditions shall follow the recommendations of
ACI 06-78 "cold weather concreting" proper protection shall
be provided to avoid concrete from freezing in a saturated condition
before reaching th design strenght. Protect fresh curing concrete from
all adverse conditions.
