WHEREAS, the 1993 Legislature allowed County Legislative authorities to adopt
1/1 Oth of 1% sales tax to be dedicated to local criminal justice systems (RCW 82.14.036);
and
WHEREAS, the Mason County Criminal Justice Working Team, a Criminal Justice
Council mandated to develop the Mason County Criminal Justice Plan under RCW
72.09.300, recommends adoption of the 1/10th of 1% sales tax to continue existing
services; and
WHEREAS, the City of Shelton officially requested that the County adopt the 1/10th
of 1% sales tax on July 27, 1993; and
WHEREAS, limited revenue has already caused the Mason County Commissioners
to decrease budgeted staffing levels in two Mason County Criminal justice departments
in the 1993 budget; and
WHEREAS, Current Expense requests exceed revenue forecasts in the preliminary
1994 budget by $1,543,395; and
WHEREAS, the Commissioners are committed to have the strongest possible
criminal justice system, providing the highest degree of safety possible within the means
of Mason County people; and
WHEREAS, the Commission values public opinion as an important part of the
decision making process regarding adoption of this tax.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners
does hereby set a public hearing to consider testimony for and against adopting a sales
tax dedicated to the criminal justice system within Mason County of 1/10th of 1% on
October 5, 1993 at 10 a.m. in the Commission Chambers.
