From the house the effluent will travel to the Septic Tank where it will be treated and travel into the Pump Chamber. The Pump is set up to a control panel that has been programmed to come on and pump for a certain amount of time. As the pump comes on it pumps the treated effluent through a Transport Line to the Laterals in the drainfield. The Drainfield consist of PVC lines that are covered with a gravel. The PVC lines have small holes spaced out at a set dimension that allows the treated effluent to be disposed into the gravel and continue its treatment process into the soil. At the end of each Lateral is a Clean-Out to be used for Operation and Maintenance. There is also an Observation Port which is used to check the system during Routine Maintenance and for observation when troubleshooting the system if issues arise. Septic System Maintenance & Recommendations Now that the system is installed it is important now to learn how to maintain and keep a healthy system. The first step in keeping a system healthy is knowing what is good for it and what is not. Here are a few things to keep in mind with your septic system: 1. Know the location of the drainfield and the components of the system. It is important that you,the homeowner, know where these are located so the system parts are not driven over (unless they have been designed and installed with that in mind), is not built over and for maintenance purposes. Some Drainfield systems can be landscaped on, however; the use of landscape plastics to keep weeds from growing should not be used. 2. Watch your water consumption. There are many water saving devices and appliances on the market today to help with this. It has been seen that too much wastewater in the system can cause system failure so it is important to be aware of how much is going into the system. 3. Inspect your Septic Tank and Pump Chamber at least once a year. This inspection can be done by the homeowner or by a Septic Professional. When inspecting the tank not only does everything want to be checked to see if it is functioning well, but also this is a good time to hose off the effluent filter. 4. Pumping the system. It is recommended that a Septic Tank be pumped every 3 to 5 years. This is important to keeping your septic healthy and knowing if it is functioning properly. A Septic Professional will also be able to help you with your pumping schedule. 5. Limit use of garbage disposals. This places solids in the septic tank that are hard to break down. 6. Do NOT use septic additives, dispose of hot tub water, or put strong chemicals down the drain as use of these can disrupt the growing of the good bacteria in the system. 7. Do NOT flush solids such as diapers, tampons, cigarette butts, condoms, grease and coffee grounds as these can cause harm to the system. 8. Direct water from downspouts and roofs away from the septic tanks and drainfield. It is recommended that a pumping schedule be contracted with a Pumping Professional. This will help to sustain the life of your system. There are also Septic Professionals which offer Operation and Maintenance programs, which is a service that will include the inspection of your system and the repair if needed. It is important to ask what is included in this service as each can vary. Contact Information The following is the contact information for the Designer, Installer and County Inspector of your system.
