Proclamation
National Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week
May 15-21, 2023
WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a Proclamation designating May 15 as
National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week to recognize
the professionalism, courage, and dedication of Police Officers for their valuable role in public safety and
safeguarding the rights and freedoms which have been guaranteed by the Constitution; and,
WHEREAS, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in the communities
across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Mason County Sheriffs Office, Shelton
Police Department, Skokomish Indian Tribe, Squaxin Island Tribe, Washington State Patrol, Washington
State Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Department of Corrections, and other state and
federal agencies; and,
WHEREAS, it is important that residents recognize and understand the duties, hazards, problems,
and sacrifices of their law enforcement agencies, and that members of our law enforcement agencies
recognize and understand their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, protecting them
against violence or disorder,protecting the innocent and vulnerable against deception,and the weak against
oppression or intimidation; and,
WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of officers killed in the line of duty should be honored,
recognized, and remembered during this dedicated week and throughout the year; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of Mason County Commissioners call upon the residents of
Mason County to observe May 15, 2023 as "National Peace Officers Memorial Day" to honor law
enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have been
disabled in the performance of their duties and recognize and pay respect to the survivors of all fallen law
enforcement officers; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Board of Mason County Commissioners call upon the
residents of Mason County to observe the week of May 15 through 21, 2023 as "National Police Week"
recognizing all law enforcement officers,past and present,who,by their faithful and loyal devotion to their
responsibilities,have rendered a dedicated service to their communities.
